Baldur's Gate 3

How to Learn Spells from Scrolls in Baldur's Gate 3

By
Nathan Garvin

Spell scrolls are useful items for the party to possess, as they allow you to cast the spell inscribed regardless of what your class is. If you have a Wizard in your party, however, these items are even more valuable, as !Wizards - and only !Wizards - can copy the scroll to their spellbook, permanently adding it to their list of known spells. This page will discuss how to copy scrolls to your spellbook in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Copying Wizard Spell Scrolls in Baldur’s Gate 3

Scattered throughout the world you’ll find (or in some cases, you can buy) spell scrolls of various sorts. As mentioned earlier, you can use spell scrolls from your inventory in or out of combat - either right-click on the scroll in your inventory screen and pick the “Cast spell (character)” option, or select the “Items” tab at the bottom of the screen. If you have a !Wizard, however, and the scroll contains a spell !Wizards can learn, you can copy that spell into your permanent spellbook, gaining access to that spell for the rest of the game. You still have to prepare newly-learned spells if you wish to cast them, just like any other spells, and in addition to that limitation you only have so many spell slots, so this is an increase in versatility more than raw power.

For more information about how spells work - including details on learning and preparing spells, and how spell slots work, check out the aptly-named How Spellcasting Works in Baldur’s Gate 3.

To copy spells, right-click a scroll in your inventory and pick the option “Learn spell”. This process is automatic, but there are some limitations - the spell scroll must contain a !Wizard spell, copying the spell incurs a one-time gold cost (presumably for the raw materials to copy the scroll, using expensive inks and parchment - the higher the spell’s level, the more gold it costs), and the act of copying the scroll will destroy said scroll, preventing you from using the scroll for other purposes.
