How to Defeat Bitores Méndez in Chapter 6 - RE4 Remake

By
Scott Peers

The fight with the ominous Bitores Méndez occurs at the end of Chapter 6 in the Resident Evil 4 Remake. This is more of a traditional boss fight than many of the others that you’ve encountered so far, since it has distinct phases where you’ll need to change your strategy to survive, and eventually kill the boss. It’s not as tough as it seems once you know what to do, so read on to find out how to deal with this encounter quickly.

How to Defeat Bitores Méndez Boss in Chapter 6 - Resident Evil 4 Remake

First Phase Attacks

As you walk into the barn just after speaking with the Merchant outside, a cutscene will play during which Méndez bursts through the wall. By the end of the scene, he will have transformed into a much larger version of himself, with claws and scorpion-like pincers. It won’t be long before he’s charing you on the ground floor, so you’ll need to be ready to avoid his melee attacks by crouching to duck from them. However, you’ll have a few brief moments at the beginning of the fight, during which you can shoot Méndez in the head. You’ll want to aim for the head as often as possible to inflict the most damage.

If you fail to evade one of the attacks from Méndez, you’ll need to use your knife to stab him in the shoulder. This ensures that you at least inflict some damage for your trouble, but ideally you won’t be in this situation to begin with. After evading one of his attacks, you can run around him to create some distance before you aim to shoot at his head again.

(1 of 3) Be ready to shoot the boss in the head during the first phase.

You’ll notice that most of the attacks will come swiftly, but Méndez has one attack which he charges up for a couple of seconds before unleashing it. You can tell when this attack is imminent since he will retract all of his limbs at the same time, often while saying “judgement”, and then proceed to move slowly as he winds up the attack. When you see this happening, you should get as far away from him as possible, and be ready to dodge two spinning attacks which will occur one after the other. If you’re far enough away, you won’t need to dodge the first attack, but you should be ready for the second.

Second Phase Attacks

These melee attacks will continue until you inflict enough damage to Méndez to trigger the second phase of the fight. A brief cutscene will precede it, during which Méndez loses his lower limbs. He’ll now begin swinging along the wooden beams in the barn, but for now he’ll stay at the back of it as he throws burning wood at you. This can be difficult to avoid, but the best way to do it is to stay on one side of the barn (left or right), and only start running just before he throws the wood. He will almost always throw two pieces of burning wood at you each time, so you need to be able to run far enough to avoid both, since he’ll track your movements. If you try to dodge this attack, you’ll almost always be too slow.

Aside from the burning wood, Méndez will also begin to throw red barrels of fuel at you. This is your chance to fight back, since if you shoot one of the barrels at least once, they will explode in his face and inflict significant damage. You should keep shooting at Méndez whenever you get the chance, and a weapon with decent accuracy at long range such as the M1903 Rifle will be particularly useful here, especially when you’re shooting the red barrels. If you allow Méndez enough time to throw a barrel at you, it will explode and you will sustain damage regardless of where you are.

During this phase you should listen for when Méndez says “Receive your judgement!”, as this marks the beginning of an attack during which he’ll swing from the wooden beams down towards you, finishing the move in a swift jab attack with his pincers. You can avoid this by dodging or running to one side, but you need to time this right just before he reaches you. Méndez will often stay on these lower beams for a while until you hit him a few times, at which point he’ll return to the back of the barn and continue to oscillate between these attacks.

(1 of 3) Use a powerful close range gun such as the shotgun when he’s on the lower beams.

The second phase of the fight is arguably more difficult than the first, but so long as you shoot the barrels when they appear, avoid the wooden planks when they’re thrown, and be ready for the melee attacks when Méndez is on the lower beams, you should be able to come through it relatively unscathed. It’s a good idea to switch between weapons when Méndez is near or far away; using a rifle at range, and preferably a shotgun when he’s close. This will allow you to preserve ammo for each phase of the fight that you’ll need it.
