Resident Evil 4 Remake has lots of secrets and puzzles scattered throughout its massive 16 Chapters, and one of the mysteries you’ll want solved is how to go about opening those square lock boxes you come into contact with in the castle. This page will detail everything you need to know about the Cubic Device and square lock boxes.
You will need the Cubic Device to get into the square lock boxes in Resident Evil 4 Remake.
What Are Square Lock Boxes?¶
During your time in the Village section of Resident Evil 4 Remake, you may have come across the numerous Wayshrines that houses hidden treasure. To get into them, you had to find the Wayshrine Key later in that section and return to claim your spoils.
Square lock boxes serve the same purpose, only this time for the Castle section of Resident Evil 4 Remake. You’ll find many of them hidden in these Chapters, but you’ll need to wait until you get to Chapter 9 to find the Cubic Device to open them. With the Cubic Device in hand, rotate the cube to fit the lock and you’ll be able to pocket the treasure that awaits.
Where is the Cubic Device?¶
As mentioned above, you’ll need to find the Cubic Device in order to get into these square lock boxes. Proceed through the game until you reach Chapter 9, where your task will be to seek out three heads for the statue in the Grand Hall.
Go upstairs in the Grand Hall and head out the northern door to reach the Armory, a large area that you need to drop down to. Once you claim the Lion Head in the center, you’ll be ambushed by a large group of Knights. Keep on the move, blast at their exposed plagas and then use Flash Grenades to take them out in on fell swoop. Ashley will help by pushing down lanterns from above, guide the Knights to her and you’ll stun them, allowing you to melee the helmets off.
Once the area is free of the Knights, catch Ashley and then use her to open the gate. As you head down this corridor, you’ll spot a large chest at the end of it, open it to obtain the Cubic Device.

Now that you have your Cubic Device, the big question is where all those square lock boxes were that you came across before you found it. You’ll need to do some backtracking to get every item, and you’ll find the location and rewards in the table below:
