Paying Off Your 2nd Loan

Bigger Home?

After you’ve upgraded from tent to house, you may have noticed that it’s a little cramped. To pay off the debt on your new home, you need 98,000 Bells. This may seem like a lot, but it won’t actually take you too long to accumulate and it can be done in your first few days.

How to Earn Bells

  • Weeding - You can sell just about anything to Timmy in either Resident Services or Nook’s Cranny. When you’re first starting off on your island, you’ll notice it’s very weedy! You can collect hundreds of weeds and sell them! One bag of weed sells for 10 Bells each, so you can make a fair bit of money just by tidying up your island!

Beautify your Island AND make bells!

  • Selling Creatures! - First things first, only sell fish, bugs and sea creatures when you have already donated the first you catch to Blathers (or kept it to the side to donate to him later)! Then, any duplicate fish you catch after the first one, is yours to sell! Different creatures sell for different amounts, typically the bigger they are, the more they sell for, but that isn’t always the case. Bigger fish and bugs tend to be a bit rarer so that’s why they usually will sell for more. This is the best way to make bells in the early game, since you can fish and catch bugs infinitely.
  • Find the Money Rock! - Each day, one of the rocks on your island will be filled with bells instead of materials! You can get up to 16,000 Bells from the rock, if you hit it the maximum amount of times in the limited time frame. Dig three holes behind yourself to ensure that you don’t recoil too far back and cannot mine the rock fast enough.

  • Shoot down yellow balloons! - You can buy a slingshot from Timmy and Tommy in Nook’s Cranny. You should be shooting down all balloons you see in the sky, but yellow ones are the only ones that have the potential to contain Bells! You can get up to 50,000 Bells from one balloon!

  • Dig up the golden cracks in the ground - Each day, there will be a golden crack on your island. It will yield 1,000 Bells. If you need the money sooner rather than later, keep the bells. But, if you want to make more, replant the money back into the golden hole. In three days time, it will grow into a Money Tree! When you shake the tree, you will receive 3 X 1,000 Bells. If you place more money in the hole, you can make three times the amount i.e 3 X 10,000 bells. This isn’t guaranteed though.

  • Sell Furniture - When you shake trees, sometimes you’ll find an item of furniture (you can get 2 a day). If it’s ugly, just sell it! There’s no point storing or displaying something that you don’t like.

  • Plant some non-native fruit trees! - On your first day, your mom sent you some fruit that was non-native to your island. If you haven’t already, you should plant those fruit to grow trees that bear a different fruit to your native fruit trees. To plant a tree, you need to use a shovel to dig a hole and then plant the fruit. It will take 3 calendar days starting from the next day for the tree to grow, so this tip will be handy for paying off future loans. Each non-native fruit will sell for 500 bells a piece. You can find palm trees on most mystery islands, and sometimes you’ll even be lucky enough to find some new fruit tree types on the island. You can harvest those fruit, or you can empower yourself by eating a piece of fruit and then digging up the whole tree! You can then take that tree home, and plant it back down on your island.

Paying off the Debt

When you have the money you need, head over to the Nookstop in Resident Services. Choose the ABD selection and then choose to pay off loan.

You can enter the full amount straight away, or you can add a bit of money everyday and gradually pay off the loan. If you have the full amount available, you might as well pay it off though!

Congratulations! You’re debt free again (for now).

Speak to Tom Nook

After paying off your loan, speak to Tom Nook. He will congratulate you on your repayment of the loan and then ask if you would like an upgrade! He can give you a bigger and better home with more space for furniture and storage. Speak to him again and choose the option About my home…. He offers to make it larger for 198,000 Bells! You will notice that with each loan, the price gets higher and higher, unfortunately. So paying off the next debt will be a lot harder and take you a bit longer than the last two loans.

Once again, you can choose a new colour for your roof (how generous!). Your new and improved home will be available to you by tomorrow!

It seems you’ll always be in debt to Tom Nook…
