Gyroids are back in Animal Crossing!

Gyroids in Animal Crossing

Whilst Gyroids are a new addition to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, they’ve been a part of the franchise since the beginning, so long time fans of Animal Crossing will be pleased to see their return! They are an artifact of sorts that, when activated, make strange noises.

In previous games, Gyroids were simply dug up out of the ground and could be found as frequently as fossils. Some players perhaps found them a bit of a nuisance as digging one up diminished the chance of finding fossils that could be donated to the Museum. In New Leaf, however, they could be given to Brewster in exchange for Coffee and collectibles so they served a bit more purpose than just being noisy artifacts!

In New Horizons, however, they seem to have had a bit of a make-over. They’re definitely cuter than ever, with more diverse designs that suit the cutesy aesthetic of the game.

What is a Gyroid Fragment?

Perhaps the biggest change in Gyroids in New Horizons is the fact that when you initially dig up a Gyroid, you’ll only dig up a ‘Gyroid Fragment’. The first time you’ll hear about Gyroids is from Brewster, though you may find one yourself before you even talk to him.

Regardless of whether you’ve found your own Gyroid Fragments, Brewster will give you a Gyroid Fragment and then tell you that they don’t do anything in this state, and instead you’ll need to dig another hole and bury it again. When you bury it, make sure to water it and the next day it’ll mature.

When you dig it up after a day, it’ll be a functional Gyroid, which you can then place anywhere, inside or outside. Each one makes a different noise so you could place more than one next to each other to make “music”.

(1 of 3) First, you’ll need to bury and water a Gyroid Fragment.

Customizing Gyroids

Even though there are tons of different types of Gyroids, you’re still given the option to customize your Gyroids! Head over to a Crafting Bench and choose to customize a Gyroid for the ability to change its color! This means you could make your Gyroids fit the theme of your island or home! It costs one customization kit to change the color.

You can even change their color to match your aesthetic!
