Shin Megami Tensei V

A Power Beyond Control

By
Jarrod Garripoli

A Power Beyond Control is a Subquest in Shin Megami Tensei V. Most Subquests will reward you with a large amount of experience, some Macca, and then you’ll receive an item of sorts. Most of the time, it’ll be a Talisman which allows you to have access to the different Magatsuhi skills in the game.

The Angel wants you to investigate the giant hole in Shinagawa

Recommended Level Location Rewards
50+ Angel; Right in front of where giant wall of flames was Small Glory Crystal x4

Investigate the giant hole in Shinagawa.

Where to start A Power Beyond Control

After defeating Surt during the main story, you will find an Angel right outside of where the giant wall of flames was located. He will give you the quest and ask you to investigate the giant hole that suddenly appeared in the Shinagawa region.

You’ll find the questgiver here right after beating Surt

Where to find Amanozako for A Power Beyond Control

Once you have accepted the quest, teleport to the Konan 3rd Block Leyliune in Shinagawa. If you remember earlier in the game, there was an Angel blocking the path to the southeast of the leyline fount. That path is now clear, so you can go explore it, although the area isn’t very big and there’s not much there, except for a single Treasure Box and a Miman. Near the end, you will find an Aitvaras NPC who talks about the giant crater, as well as pointing out Amanozako; he also gives a clue on how to proceed. Basically, you need the moon phase to be at a FULL in order to trigger the boss fight with Amanozako. Note that simply approaching Amanozako during the FULL moon will trigger the fight, so be prepared before doing so.

You’ll unlock this area during this quest, which is where she is located

Recommended Party

Amanozako can be a challenging boss, as she has pretty high Magic and despite being called “weak,” Energy Drain can really put a damper on your party’s damage output. There is a way to counter that, a little bit, though, which is in the form of the Divine race’s Magatsuhi skill. If you don’t have the Divine Talisman, you can get it by speaking with an Angel right after defeating Loup-garou in Shinagawa. Sea of Stars, the name of the Magatsuhi skill, recovers a moderate amount of MP to all allies, which can be a lifesaver for a boss like this. A good time to use it is when you see 2-3 characters have under 100 MP or so, as it should push them above 200 total MP.

(1 of 3) Amanozako will use Energy Drain throughout the fight to take some HP and MP

You shouldn’t be using Strength based attacks during this battle, as Amanozako can counter with her Heavenly Counter skill. This skill will counter those kinds of attacks with a weak Dark attack, that also lowers their attack by one rank (Tarunda effect). That rules out Dracostrikes entirely, so while Black Frost could’ve been a good demon to use, he’s not really going to be useful. This means you will be using a Magic-focused party here, as Physical-based ones are going to have to deal with that counter that’s going to nerf the damage output.

Getting onto the actual battle, Amanozako tends to go through different phases, depending on when she charges the Magatsuhi. At the beginning, she will usually stick to using Mazionga and Energy Drain. When she charges the Magatsuhi for the first time, it will be followed by Mazionga, so make sure to toss up an Elec Dampener. After that first one, she seems to add Mazanma into the mix, along with the other two skills mentioned above. The second Magatsuhi charge will have her using Mazanma after it, so you can throw out a Force Dampener.

(1 of 2) You should have characters immune to both Electric and Force to cut down on her turns

You should have characters immune to both Electric and Force to cut down on her turns (left), She only appears to use Diarama once whenever her HP is critical (right)

It isn’t until after that second Magatsuhi skill that the battle will truly begin. Amanozako will begin using Tentarafoo and Makarakarn, with both being annoying. If anyone gets confused by Tentarafoo, you will want to cure it immediately. Should Amanozako use Makarakarn, then you will need to use something weak to try and get rid of it. The last skill you see on the list above is Diarama, which is only used a single time whenever Amanozako is in critical HP. You will never see it again after that, so thankfully you don’t need to worry about it. The only skills you should be using are Fire and Ice magic, since that is what Amanozako is weak to, while all other elements are resisted in some way. The usual buffs/debuffs will also help in this battle, especially Tarunda.

You will take a piece of Amanozako’s power after the battle, giving you Amanozako’s Essence. This is a high level Essence, with some stronger elemental spells, but it might be a good idea to not use it right away and save it, as the spells cost a lot of MP. Return to the Angel who gave you the quest to receive your reward.
