Shin Megami Tensei V

Lighting the Way

By
Jarrod Garripoli

Lighting the Way is a Subquest in Shin Megami Tensei V. Most Subquests will reward you with a large amount of experience, some Macca, and then you’ll receive an item of sorts. Most of the time, it’ll be a Talisman which allows you to have access to the different Magatsuhi skills in the game.

Jack wants some Fire Gems

Bring 2 Fire Gems to Jack-o’-Lantern.

Where to start Lighting the Way

Lighting the Way is likely the first quest you will find, and complete, once you make your way to the Chiyoda region. When you first enter the Ginza area, which is the first place of the Chiyoda region, head to the nearby Leyline to register it. A little southwest-west of the Leyline will be the Jack-o’-Lantern that gives you the quest. He wants two Fire Gems from you.

Jack will be right by the Ginza Leyline

Where to find Fire Gems for Lighting the Way

Fire Gems are consumable battle items that you have likely already used during the course of the game, since they deal excellent damage to enemies whenever you don’t have access to a Fire spell with your current loadout. However, at the current point of the game, you cannot purchase Fire Gems, so you will either need to find some or receive it as a reward, assuming you don’t already have some in your inventory. If you’ve gotten the majority of the Mimans up to this point, then you know Gustave has given you plenty of Fire Gems as rewards. Should you have used them all, then you will either have to farm them from enemies or hopefully find them as drops from a Navigator demon.

You don’t start with a Navigator in Chiyoda, but you get one upon starting The Path to Myojin Forest, which will be pretty much near the beginning of Chiyoda. Of course, the odds of getting one Fire Gem, let alone two, from Navigators isn’t exactly great, so it might be easier to just farm them as drops from demons. Eligor and Hua Po are two demons you’ve encountered that can drop Fire Gems. Of the two, there are plenty more Hua Pos to go around in the hilly section (up the climbing blocks) in Konan 4th Block in Shinigawa. Once you have the Fire Gems, turn them in for your reward, noting you can repeat this quest infinitely for more Chakra Drops (requires 2 Fire Gems each time).

There are a lot of Hua Pos here in Shinagawa to farm Fire Gems, if needed

Recommended Party

There isn’t really a specific party needed for this quest, since you likely have Fire Gems already in your inventory. If you need to farm them, the Hua Po demons should be a good 7-8 levels below you, so you shouldn’t really have any problems with them at that point. They are weak to Ice, so as long as you have Ice skills, then you should be fine.
