The Basincreek Building¶
It’s now time to return to exploring the outskirts of New Vegas, and you might as well start out where you left off… at the corner between the southern areas and the western areas. Fast-travel back to the Allied Technology Offices and head north to find a road running east-west along the southern perimeter of Camp McCarran. Follow this road west to find The Basincreek Building. Inside you can find more bugs, including Giant Ants and Radroaches. The only notable loot is behind a locked door [Easy] along the western end of the building. In the office beyond this door you’ll find an issue of Tales of Chivalrie.
West Pump Station¶
The next areas lie deep in Fiend territory; Motor Runner may be dead, but his junkies haven’t stopped prowling the ruins of western New Vegas. Kill whatever you come across as you head north-west to reach the West Pump Station, inside of which are more Fiends. You can also find a Pump Station Terminal which, if you repair by passing a [Science 50] check you’ll get some XP and start the quest Hard Luck Blues … if you didn’t already finish it. In any event, it’s still a good source of XP. Pilfer the place for some minor loot including an Ammo Box in the maintenance room to the south, then retreat back outside.
New Vegas Steel¶
Traverse more Fiend Territory as you continue north-west to find New Vegas Steel, which is across the depressed highway to the west, perilously close to the South Vegas Ruins East Entrance map marker near which Cook-Cook kept camp. Inside this building you’ll find a bunch of Crazed Mr. Handy robots and some equally crazed Mr. Steel variants. Disable them, then search the entry room for a Patriot’s Cookbook on a desk. On the same desk is a Sunset Sarsaparilla Star Bottle Cap, and on another table is a Terminal, which has the bogus “Lucky 38 Executive Override” option. In two bins near this desk are issues of Tæles of Chivalrie, Fixin’ Things and Programmer’s Digest. In the mysteriously operational factory floor, ascend the metal stairs (grabbing some .357 Rounds and .308 Rounds along the way) to reach a metal balcony over-looking the factory floor, wherein you’ll find two Ammo Boxes.
Monte Carlo Suites¶
Make your way to the Sunset Sarsaparilla Headquarters building and from there head north to find the Monte Carlo Suites. Kill the Scorpion Gang Member outside, then head inside to find more gangers, led by two named individuals; Yvette and Roller. Yvette carries a .44 Magnum Revolver in exceptional condition (worth over 2,000 Caps) and another wields a Ripper. Loot them, then loot their stronghold to find a few Refrigerators with goodies inside. In a room to the west you’ll find an Ammo Box [Average] on a metal shelf along with a Work Bench and two Reloading Benches. Through a locked door [Easy] to the south you’ll find some beds, and in a room to the east you can score some Jet and 10mm Rounds off a table.
Leave the suites and head west to find an unmarked Abandoned House, outside of which is a mailbox rigged up as a proximity mine. Brave it and disarm the trap, or trigger it and run. Near or inside the house you’ll find several Fiends, but otherwise the loot inside isn’t exceptional.
Westside¶
Next stop; Westside. You visited The Thorn during the quest There Stands the Grass , and Westside itself while working for Contreras, but now it’s time to actually give the place a thorough dose of exploration. Here are some points of interest:
- In Klamath Bob’s Liqour Store you’ll find… well, Klamath Bob, who sells a variety of junk and food, but you can also get him to mention “some tribal from Arroyo” who visited Klamath before his time… which of course is another reference to Fallout 2. He’ll also tell you about Westside, especially its co-op and its resident Super Mutant, Mean Sonofabitch, and its woes, namely the Fiends and the Scorpions.
- Wandering around town you can find Mean Sonofabitch who… well, he doesn’t have much to say, but… well, it’s a Super Mutant, all right.
- Clayton Etienne can be found in the Westside Co-op. Aside from talking about the co-op and the troubles of New Reno, he has little to say, but his shop can be looted for plenty of food items, and there’s a safe [Average] behind the counter.
Yeah… it’s not all that interesting. That being the case, turn your attention to the quest The Coyote .
The Coyote¶
Find the Casa Madrid Apartments along the western edge of Westside and from there head south to find Dermot and Saint James. The former doesn’t have much to say, although they’ll both talk about each other, so talk to Saint James and ask about the missing persons. Point out a slip-up he makes in conversation, then head over to the nearby Casa Madrid Apartments. Talk to Marco outside to learn that his establishment is pulling double duty as a brothel. You can ask him about Dermot and Saint James, but he has little to say, so head on in the apartments.
First things first, yes, it’s a brothel. Yes, you can trade Caps for services. Talk to Pretty Sarah to learn about what - or who - is for sale. Head upstairs if you want to partake; Maude will set you back 75 Caps (only if you’re male), Jimmy will play ball for 200 Caps (again, only if you’re male) and Sweetie will show you a good time for 300 Caps. Whether you help keep them employed or not, be sure to talk to Sweetie about Saint James, a frequent customer. Pay her 200 Caps (or 100 Caps with a [Barter 30] check, and she’ll tell you about some creepy things about Saint James’ in-the-sack antics. You can also pay her 250 Caps for the key to his room, if you somehow cannot pick the lock.
Once you’re done dealing with Sweetie, get to looting; there are a few chems, the odd magazine and plenty of food (mostly in Refrigerators) lying around in the apartments, if you’ve got a mind to do some stealing. On the upper level there are two locked doors; one [Very Easy] with nothing of interest behind it, and another [Average] with… well, a Refrigerator to loot. Downstairs you can find Anderson in his apartment, the resident Follower of the Apocalypse who has been responsible for so much of Westside’s success. Despite this, he has little of interest to say, but you can loot an Ammo Box [Easy] near his bed. In Marco’s Apartment [Average] you’ll find a Refrigerator to loot and an Ammo Box in the bathroom.
Now turn your attention to the shady prospectors, Dermot and Saint James. Looting Dermot’s apartment will yield Dermot’s Ledger, which can be found on a table, and details explicitly where the refugees have been going, and the two prospector’s role in their disappearance. Next head to Saint James’ apartment [Average] and grab the Teddy Bear off his bed. You can now return to Captain Parker at Aerospace Technology Park and give him the evidence for a quest reward, or you can confront the pair of Prospectors first. This will naturally end in conflict, but putting down these monsters is, if anything, a bonus.
