Suggested Level: 31
After finishing up (or skipping) all the optional content in the southeastern end of Egypt which is currently feasible for you to complete, it’s time to turn your attention northwards towards the Herakleion Nome, where you’re to meet with Cleopatra and report your successes. On the way, however, are numerous sidequests, and while the level requirements for main quests in Herakleion are close to what they were in Faiyum Oasis, they’ll jump after a bit, so you may want to ensure you’re trending more towards the higher end of Herakleion Nome’s level range (33), rather than the lower end (30).
If you can’t be bothered to deal with them now, skip ahead to “ Way of the Gabiniani “, but there aren’t many new quests to deal with, and there’s a sequence of main quests coming up that it makes little sense to interrupt, so make sure you’re ready for them.
Animal Conservation¶
This quest will begin automatically if you set foot in the crocodile-infested southwestern end of the Herakleion Nome. Walk around near the southern-most fast travel point and a mysterious whistle will draw Senu away from you, depriving you of the hawk’s services until you find whatever drew the bird away. That damn fickle, winged rat! Well, you can’t just leave Senu behind - you need your eyes in the sky to locate quest objects and scout the positions of guards.
Make your way to the quest marker, which is south of the southern-most fast travel point and north of a Crocodile Lair. When you arrive you’ll encounter a woman named Tahira, whom appears to be an old acquaintance of Bayek’s. It’s a good thing to know Senu isn’t in danger, but unfortunately, Tahira has a cause of her own, which Senu’s disobedience got Bayek involved in. The Romans hunt the beasts of Egypt for export and eventual slaughter in their Colesseum, and Tahira would stop the poaching, had she the power… but with Bayek’s help, you two may just be formidable enough to make a difference.
Ruined Temple of Sobek¶
When you’re back in control of Bayek, follow Tahira to a ruined temple of Sobek, around which numerous crocodiles lurk… enough so that Tahira bids you to climb to avoid them, and it’s good advice. Climb to reach the quest marker - the highest point of the ruins still extant - and she’ll introduce you to one of the ruin’s inhabitants, who has a taste for colorful food. Unfortunately, one of the beasts is missing, which causes Tahira some concern. Seems those dastardly Romans are at it again, and with Bayek by her side, she’s confident enough to attack them directly, bidding you to follow her east to the Roman fort.
Before you go, however, consider claiming the fast travel point here, which is southwest of where the cutscene took place. Your destination is atop a statue, and although the statue’s lower half has no hand-holds for Bayek, you can still climb it by first scaling a nearby column, then jumping from the top of this column onto the statue.
Carcer Roman Compound¶
After you’re done in the ruins, make your way east through the swamp to reach the area indicated by the quest marker, near the village of Natho. Tahira will rejoin you here and talk as you turn your attentions to the Roman for to the northeast - the Carcer Roman Compound. When you get close, use Senu to locate the abducted crocodile, and also scout out the Roman camp. This is a pretty traditional enemy camp, consisting of a captain (level 32) and several soldiers. Not too big, not too busy, and it’s one of the few camps where you can cause some real mayhem by unleashing animals - particularly the massive, albino crocodile you’re after. With Tahira and the crocodile helping out, you shouldn’t fear a frontal assault, just don’t count on the crocodile to handle the entire fort itself - it’s formidable, but you will have to help take the Romans out.
After they’re all dead, you’ll be tasked with leading the crocodile back to its home near the ruined temple of Sobek, back west. First, grab the chest near the tree to complete the area’s location objectives, then just follow the crocodile. You’ll probably encounter some Roman soldiers along the way, as well as the odd hippopotamus and/or hyena, but with a squad of three nothing should really trouble you too much. When you arrive back at the temple, this quest will end… but Tahira has more tasks for Bayek.
