In the lower left corner of the battle screen you have the following:
a) ATB Gauge, which currently consists of only two segments.
b) List of Commands . Currently you only have three:
- Auto-battle will have AI choose the most appropriate action.
- Abilities lets you choose commands you want to use.
- Items lets you use available battle items.
The ATB Gauge slowly fills from left to right. Once it is full, your leader will execute commands in the order listed above the ATB Gauge. Most commands cost one segment of ATB, though you will also access commands which take 2, 3 or all segments.
Once you choose “Auto-battle”, you will have to choose the target you want to attack. You can switch between targets and decide what targets to prioritise. This a skill you should learn.
If you choose “Abilities”, you can then choose which commands you want your character to execute. Each command is added to the ATB Gauge, and you can add as many commands as there are available segments. Greyed out commands cannot be added to the gauge. Once you’ve selected your commands, the game will provide you with a list of possible targets.
The maximum amount of segments you can obtain is six - thus, four more than what you begin with. Two are obtained during the course of the game, one can be bought by purchasing relevant upgrade nodes (more on that later), and the last can be obtained by upgrading the character’s weapon to its maximum tier (more on that later).
In the lower right corner of the battle screen you have several pieces of info:
a) Character’s name.
b) Character’s current HP (if it drops to zero, character is KOed).
c) A green bar representing ratio of character’s current to max HP.
In the upper right corner of the screen you have a Stagger Gauge of the targeted enemy. See the relevant tutorial for more information.
Game’s Tutorial: Time flows continuously throughout battle. Watch as your ATB gauge slowly charges. Characters perform actions by expending charges on the ATB gauge segments. The actions which they perform depend on the commands you select.
You can input entire strings of commands, then unleash them all at once. Select “Auto-battle” to queue up a set of commands tailored to your situation. Select “Abilities” to specify individual commands as you see fit. A description of each command will be displayed at the top of the screen.
Characters other than the party leader will perform abilities depending on the role they are currently assigned. You cannot control them directly.
