Upon finishing No Rest For The Wicked’s tutorial, some of the first items you will find are tools. These are necessary for upgrading your gear and you can equip three of them at once, out of the four tools total.
You won’t have to worry too much about doing this often initially, but as you progress, harvesting materials becomes more important. So, it is key that you grab a Woodcutter’s Axe as soon as you can. Here is where you can find it.
Woodcutter’s Axe Locations¶
The Woodcutter’s Axe is found in chests or sitting in the environment in the first area: The Shallows. You can also buy it from Fillmore in the Mess Hall, which is also nearby, just north of The Shallows. He will head to Sacrament alongside you if you are on your way there. So, if you don’t find it initially, he may already be heading towards the town.
Loot is randomized in No Rest For The Wicked so the spot where your axe spawns might not be in the same place ours spawned. One will be lurking in The Shallows though either in the environment or in a chest.

The axe is one of four tools you will need in the game to be able to gather materials. Simply approach any thin-looking tree and interact with it to start chopping away.
After you do this, you can leave and return, or make your way back after some time to have the tree respawn.
Keep an eye out for thin trees that can be chopped down. Although you will need to toil away at them around half a dozen times.
