Pillar of the Winds - All Item Locations
Dragonlord's Castle - All Item Locations
One of the mainstays of any classic JRPG is a means of transportation, with one of the first examples being a boat, or ship. That classic example is something you will be able to unlock in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake, which happens during the course of the main story. This page will look at the events that occur leading up to unlocking the ship, as well as a roadmap of where to go following getting your ship.
How to Get the Ship¶
For the most part, the events leading up to the ship are pretty linear, with not much deviation being allowed on your part. After you clear the Pillar of the Winds dungeon and unlock the
Windbraker, you can head over to the Shrine West of Moonbrooke to gain access to another area. In the big desert here, make a pit stop at Oasis if you want, but your next objective is the Dragon’s Horn (South) to the northwest of there. There isn’t a boss in this dungeon, and it’s pretty straightforward and linear, so you’re not getting lost.
(1 of 3) The first stop on getting the ship is procuring the Windbraker from the Pillar of the Winds.
At the top, you will use the Windbraker to float over the gap and to the land north of the Dragon’s Horn (South). Note that the tower near where you land is the Northern Dragon’s Horn and is completely optional. Other than that, you want to head to the town on the coast, called Rippleport. Approach the big building here for a scene, where you’re directed to the Mountains North of Rippleport. Make sure you’re fully healed before going here, as you will be put into a challenging fight.
Boss: Twisted Sister and Mummy Deerest¶
You are not fighting just a single enemy here, as you have two boss-types and two normal enemies. Of the four enemies present, the
Mummy Deerest definitely hits the hardest with its physical attacks, which also has a chance to paralyze. The
Gremlins only seem to either do a normal attack or Fire Breath, the latter of which will hit your entire party for about 10 damage each. While it may not seem like much, you don’t really have a means of healing everyone at once and that damage adds up with two of them. The first order of business should be to take out the two Gremlins first, as they don’t have much health.
Once those two are gone, it’s probably better to focus fire the
Twisted Sister, who has a few moves in her arsenal. In addition to annoyances like
Dazzle and
Sap, she can use Sizzle on your party for decent area-of-effect damage, plus she also has access to Heal. While you should be able to outdamage the Heal easily, Twisted Sister can act twice per round, so that Heal can be used twice. Twisted Sister also has much less HP over the
Mummy, who is built like a tank. Since the Mummy Deerest only hits a single person at a time, it’s much easier to manage that over a potential Sizzle.
(1 of 4) The Gremlins will mostly do a Fire Breath, which isn’t a lot of damage, but it adds up.
When you’ve defeated the enemies here, you can return to Rippleport and speak to the mayor to report your success. They will grant you a ship and after a few more scenes, you can finally set sail!
Where to Go First¶
With you finally getting a lot more options for exploring the world map, you will need to be a little careful here, as going too far in a direction can result in you encountering very strong foes out on the waters. There are four new objectives given to you at this point, but only one is really viable. Before going anywhere, though, look at the world map to see the Dragon’s Horn dungeons to the southwest of Rippleport. Sail in between then and follow the coastline south, until you reach a very small island just to the west of Oasis. This is the Isle of the Monarch of Medals (Map Marker), the place where you turn in all of those Mini Medals you’ve been finding.
Outside of that little pit stop, the next course of action that is natural is Alefgard, the continent from the first game. The enemies here are either pretty weak, at first, but aren’t that much stronger than the ones you encountered up to this point. To get to Alefgard, look for the continent to the east of Rippleport, then follow the western coastline to the northwestern tip, which is where the town of Galenholm (Map Marker) is located. Start here, then roam the world map to find Tantegel, the spot where you’ll start the scenario that is a catalyst for quite a bit here.
After that scenario is complete (do the Shrine of Rain following it to get start on the Sigil Hunting), you can go to Burrowell (Map Marker) next, located in the south of the world map, towards the center. You can then head to Zahan (Map Marker), towards the southeastern corner, for the third scenario, which will lead you close enough to Beran (Map Marker), for the final of the four scenarios that open up after getting the ship. When you finish Beran, you will finally unlock the fourth party member, too!
