Orichalcum and Erdrick's Sword Locations
A Man of Many Talents - Unlocking All Spells and Abilities
The Passage to Rendarak is how you’re going to get to
Hargon, but it’s a place fraught with danger. It is basically the beginning of the end for the main story in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake, and the penultimate dungeon. The enemies are tough, plus the place is filled with pitfalls that will send you back to previous floors, forcing you to backtrack quite often. This page will help guide you through the treacherous Passage to Rendarak, as well as help you get all of the items within it.
Unlocking the Passage to Rendarak¶
There are two main things you will need to do in order to get inside the Passage to Rendarak. The first is to complete the Volcanic Grotto dungeon, which is found southwest of Dirkandor. At the end of the dungeon, after defeating the boss, you will obtain the
False Idol. The other thing needed is to defeat the boss at Dirkandor, after which, you can speak to the old man at Beran inside the church to get some more story stuff. This unlocks the door in the upstairs portion of the church there in Beran, allowing you to take the teleporter to the Shrine South of Rendarak.
(1 of 3) Speak to the priest in Beran after the boss in Dirkandor to open the way to the dungeon.
Before you actually do that, though, you’ll probably want to visit the Shrine of Rubiss. This isn’t particularly long, but you do need the ability to dive into the deepest part of the ocean’s waters. There’s not much here, but you will have to fight a boss, upon which you will receive the
Eye of Rubiss. This isn’t needed to get into Rendarak, but it is needed for the bit after it, so it’s a good idea to do everything now. Once you have everything listed above, go through the door in the back of the church in Beran, then use the teleporter to arrive at the Shrine South of Rendarak.
There’s a scene here on your first visit, then you can exit (some goodies can be found at the Shrine South of Rendarak) to the world map. Head west, through the poison swamp, and to the opening in the mountain. It is here you’ll use the False Idol to open up the dungeon known as the Passage to Rendarak.
Passage to Rendarak - B1 Treasures¶
| Treasure | Location | Map Marker |
|---|---|---|
| Seed of Strength | Chest in lower right corner | Map Marker |
| Seed of Luck | Hidden item in northwest corner | Map Marker |
When you first enter the dungeon, you will be on L1 and if you use Nose for Treasure, it will say there are three treasures on this floor. However, all of these are empty, so if you want to open them, they are all marked on the map as chests. Otherwise, ignore them and fall into any of the holes to go to B1. Yes, there are spots on L1 where you can fall through the floor, so keep a lookout for the rocky spots that look different. Here, you’ll want to use Safe Passage to avoid taking damage from the poison on the ground. Head to the southeast corner for a chest that contains a Seed of Strength, then travel to the northwestern corner to find a hidden item on the left side of the rock there, which is a Seed of Luck. Note that if you head towards the middle of the room, there will be a scene between your party members.
Passage to Rendarak - L2 and L3 Treasures¶
| Treasure | Location | Map Marker |
|---|---|---|
| Magic Water (x3) | In chest in isolated area of L3 | Map Marker |
| In chest in isolated area of L3 | Map Marker | |
| Seed of Wisdom | In chest in mapless area of L2 | N/A |
That’s all for down here, so take any of the ladders back to L1, then make your way to the northwestern stairs on that floor. This will lead you to a long passage that takes you to L3, where you’ll find two chests toward the southern end. One gives you Magic Water x3, while the other had a
Hocus Hat. Return to the previous floor and look on the eastern side for two sets of stairs. Both lead you to the same place, so go up the one in the northeast to arrive on L2, but there’s a catch. You are unable to open your map here, so it’s extremely easy to get lost, if you’re not paying attention.
If you use Nose for Treasure, you should see that there are five to be found, but in actuality, there’s only a single treasure (the other four are empty). From where you begin, go right and up at the first set of stairs for one of the empty chests. Return to the previous path and continue right, ignoring the next stairs, and going up at the following for a chest with a Seed of Wisdom. Opening up the other treasures here (even if they’re empty), go back to the path, head right to the next set of stairs and go up for the chest.
Return to the east-to-west hallway and go down to another one, then go left and down for the empty chest. Back on the path, head left past the next stairs and to the second one, where going down reveals the final empty chest. That’s everything here and Nose for Treasure should show nothing more. From the final empty chest, return to the path, go right and then up to the room in the middle. If you look closely, there’s a ladder on the right side, which leads you to L3, or the proper section of it.
Passage to Rendarak - L3 and L5 Treasures¶
| Treasure | Location | Map Marker |
|---|---|---|
| In chest near SE corner (L3) | Map Marker | |
| Spiked Armour | In chest near SE corner (L3) | Map Marker |
| Erdrick’s Armour | In chest on L5 from L3 SE stairs | Map Marker |
| Mad Cap | In chest on L5 from L3 W stairs | Map Marker |
| 1,455 Gold Coins | In eastern chest of central L3 | Map Marker |
| In western chest of central L3 | Map Marker | |
| 560 Gold Coins | In chest on L5 from L3 NW stairs | Map Marker |
| In chest on L5 from L3 NW stairs | Map Marker |
You will see a number of exits here on this floor, but the only one that continues the dungeon is in the northeastern corner. All other stairs will lead to treasures, so it’s a good idea to go to each one. To start, head to the southeastern corner and loot the two chests down there for
Tombola Tickets (x4) and a Spiked Armour, then take the stairs down here to find a chest that has Erdrick’s Armour! That’s probably the best thing you’ll find here, but the other stuff is fine, too. Return to L3 and go to the ladder you used to get here.
Straight west of the ladder will be another exit, leading to a lone chest that contains a Mad Cap. Back to the ladder, go a little north and there will be two chests, one on each side, before reaching the northern corridor. The eastern of the two chests has 1,455 Gold Coins, while the western one has a
Kacrackle Scroll. Give it to whomever you want, as you’ll be getting a second very shortly. With that out of the way, go to the northern end of the floor and then towards the northwestern stairs. These will bring you to the final two chests, yielding 560 Gold Coins and
Thanatos’ Shield. The latter is cursed, of course, but Caradoc is immune to curses, so you can put it on him if you want.
Passage to Rendarak - L5 and L4 Treasures¶
| Treasure | Location | Map Marker |
|---|---|---|
| Seed of Wisdom | Chest on western side of L5 | Map Marker |
| Demon Whip (Cursed) | Chest in northern end of L5 | Map Marker |
| Hapless Helm (Cursed) | Chest towards SW corner (L4) | Map Marker |
| Mini Medal | Chest in NW corner (L4) | Map Marker |
The treasures have been gotten, so you can now take the stairs in the northeast on L3 to arrive at the proper part of L5. There are a large number of pitfalls here, bringing you down to L4, so be wary of them. You will want to go down there, though, but for now, let’s grab all of the treasures on L5. The two chests in the center and south part of the floor are Mimics, so open them if you want to be annoyed by their usage of
Thwack, although they are probably less of a problem now than prior. The chest on the western side contains a Seed of Wisdom, while the chest in the northern end has a Demon Whip. As the name suggests, this is another piece of cursed equipment, so it’s probably best to just sell it.
Now, go to any of the pitfalls on this floor and fall through it, taking you down to L4. Depending on where you fall down, you might have to walk a little bit to reach the four chests here. The ones in the center, as well as the chest towards the southeast, are more Mimics, so fight them if you wish to do so. As for the actual loot, the chest towards the southwest has a Hapless Helm, another piece of cursed equipment that probably isn’t really an upgrade (it also sells for very little, so it’s a trash item). The last chest is in the northwestern corner and yields a Mini Medal.
Despite not being on L4, there is one last thing to grab here before continuing with the story. In the southwestern corner of L4, there is a hole you can drop down, which will put you right next to a weapon stuck in the ground. Interact with it you get the
Thunderbolt Blade, but the problem here is that there seems to be no way out. Head to the right to find a pitfall, dropping you to L2, where a teleporter on the north end brings you back to L1. You’ll now have to make your way back up to L5, so you’ll have to go through what you did to get back there.
Note that once you get to L2, the mapless room, you can simply head right to the third set of stairs, then go down to see the ladder to L3. Once you make it back to L5, carefully make your way down to the ladder in the southeast corner to arrive at L6, where you’ll witness a cutscene and throw into a 1-versus-1 fight with a
Hypermalediction. You only have the Hero here, so you want to make sure you have Miracle Slash learned on him, since that will really help him. The Hypermalediction likes to use
Dazzle (the worst thing to happen),
Sap, and Acceleratle, in addition to its normal attack. For defeating it, you will get your second
Kacrackle Scroll, as well as reunite with your friends.
Passage to Rendarak - L6 Treasures¶
| Treasure | Location | Map Marker |
|---|---|---|
| Dieamend | In NW corner of first area | N/A |
| Mini Medal | In chest in second area | N/A |
This floor is another one where you aren’t able to use your map, for some odd reason. As you can see above, there are two items here, although the only one worth worrying about is the Mini Medal, of course. From where you start, go west and into the next area. When you reach the first fork, head north and continue to the right to find another split path, where you’ll want to go west. It is around here that you’ll find a hidden Dieamend on the ground. Return to the previous fork now and go east this time, entering the next room. Continue east until you eventually enter a new area.
More blind dungeoning here, but at the first split, go west to one more, where you’ll want to go right to find a chest partially hidden by the foreground rock; this chest has the Mini Medal. To the right of the chest is another fork, so go east first, up the stairs and east again. Keep going east to more stairs and at the top, head east once more to find another chest. This one is a Mimic, so fight it if you wish, then head west, north (stairs) and north again (more stairs). At the top, continue east and then south when you can, and you should find a green, glowing tile. This completely heals you, so use it and just east of there will be another boss fight.
Belial here is very similar to the first encounter, although he will use
Kaboom from the start. So, basically just use Magic Barrier and
Kabuff to keep the damage to a minimum, then have Peronel use Wild Side +
Multiheal, or Caradoc’s
Omniheal, if necessary. After the fight is over, you’ll get the
Mark of Moonbrooke, then can finally exit the Passage to Rendarak!
