How to Recruit Matilda
Mermaid's Sanctuary - All Item Locations
The first time you fight
Belial is in the Faerie Palace, as you’re trying to rescue the faeries from his presence. You need to defeat him in order to continue with the main story, so you don’t have any option but to fight him. This page will look at how to prepare for this boss, as well as go over his attacks and how to defeat him.
Belial is one of Hargon’s lieutenants and is a very strong boss.
Belial’s Attacks¶
Belial can be quite the difficult boss, as he has a lot of attacks that vary from physical to magical.
- Normal Attack: Depending on who gets hit from it, this can do upwards of 70 damage to a single character.
- Desperate Attack: Another physical attack that is much stronger than the normal one.
Buff: Belial uses this to increase his physical defense. There’s nothing you can do about it, but to take it in stride.- Magic Barrier: Belial’s magical resistance increases slightly. Since he seems to not take much damage from magic to begin with, outside of wind, this isn’t that bad.
Boom: Magic attack that hits the entire party. With Magic Barrier active, this does about 20 damage.- Wildfire: A breath attack that hits the entire party; Does about 30-35 damage. You can reduce this damage with Insulatle.
Moreheal: Belial can heal himself with this spell, which can be upwards of 170 HP. Not much you can do about this.
Kaboom: He’ll start using this in place of Boom whenever you get him to yellow health (his name will turn yellow). Does around 50-60 damage to each character with Magic Barrier active.
Belial Boss Strategies¶
Belial can be a bit of a pain, as he acts twice per turn and will even get a third action once his health gets low. This can be a big problem, since he will regularly cast Boom on your party, dealing about 20-30 damage if you have Magic Barrier active. Of course, if you don’t, then Boom will do a lot more damage and things won’t be pretty, so make sure you always have it active. Likewise, you also always want to keep
Kabuff up at all times, since Belial’s physical attacks can hurt a lot. This is especially true for characters like Peronel and Matilda, who aren’t going to be taking those kinds of hits too well.
(1 of 4) Belial can cast both Magic Barrier and Buff on himself, but you can’t do anything about it.
You can also ignore trying to debuff Belial here, especially with
Sap, since he is highly resistant to it. The battle will pretty much just be hitting him with your own attacks, while trying to recover from the damage he does to you. The Hero should pretty much always be on the offensive here and you should have Peronel use
Oomph on him. Normal attacks, especially if you got the
Platinum Sword from Dirkandor’s Tombola Stall, can work, but Propellor Blade will also do some extra damage. Every so often, you can have the Hero use Attack Attacker to debuff his strength some, which might be the only debuff that can work here.
As for the other characters, Caradoc will likely be switching between buffs and healing, with maybe some attacks here and there. Peronel will pretty much be on buffing and healing duty throughout the entire battle. If you’ve thoroughly explored every dungeon/area up to this point, you can use the
Soothing Song Scroll on Peronel. While this isn’t a huge heal (it only does like 20-25), it might be the only way to have a party-wide heal without doing some extra grinding. If you don’t mind doing that extra grinding, though, Peronel does learn
Multiheal at level 32 and that would make this battle a lot easier.
If you don’t decide to do extra grinding, a level range of about 27-29 should be good enough, although it can be a challenging battle. Matilda is in a bit of a pickle here, as she won’t really fall under any designed role. You can put the
Kabuff Scroll on Matilda, allowing her to take over some buffing duties from Caradoc, plus she can also use Insulatle, if you’re using it to help with Wildfire. Unfortunately, she can’t do much to help with healing, since she only has Heal. If you want some more utility from Matilda, she gets access to
Wizardly Waft, which can help keep everyone’s MP pools up.
Things start to get really hairy once you get Belial’s health down to where his name is yellow. At this point, he might get three actions per turn, but the big thing is he’ll replace Boom with Kaboom. This attack really hurts, even moreso without Magic Barrier active, so make sure you have that up now. Kaboom will probably do around 55-65 damage to each character, so any turn where he doesn’t use it is a blessing. If you can outheal this phase of the battle, then you should be good and will be able to take him down.
Upon defeating Belial, he will feed you a piece of information about the mermaids being attacked, then disappear. To get to the mermaid’s domain, you will be given
Lorelei’s Harp, although it’s not activated by simply playing it. The next stop on your adventure will be Gaggle Rock, yet again.
