Defeating "Hargon" iconHargon is no simple task - you’ll have to seek aid from various sources, put out fires as they break out (figuratively, mostly) and seek out various MacGuffins to help you in your quest. One of the longer-running objectives in the game, however, is finding five Sigils that grant you passive boons and contribute to the greater goal of rousing Rubiss. Doing so will earn you the trophy/achievement Good Morning, Goddess, and this page will provide a walkthrough for obtaining said trophy/achievement by finding all five Sigils in Dragon Quest 2: HD-2D Remake!

Searching for Sigils

You’ll be tasked with hunting down the five Sigils fairly early in the game - first the "Dragonlord" iconDragonlord’s Descendent will charge you with rescuing the faeries at the Shrine of Rain, after which the Over-Seer will further this charge by giving you the "Echo Flute" iconEcho Flute, which will help you locate the Sigils. Give it a blow when in an area and… you know, what? Just turn on quest objectives, it makes this key item redundant and speeds matters up considerably. Or better yet, just follow this guide!

Defeat the Nekomancer, a cat-like caster with a penchant for Thwack,

and you’ll obtain the Star Sigil!

Star Sigil Location and Effects

One of the first Sigils you can realistically retrieve, this one is found in the Lighthouse dungeon, which is located on an island south of Alefgard, west of Moonbrooke, east, northeast of the Oasis. Chat with the “Guardian of the Sigil”, work your way up to 7F for another scene, then follow the old man down to 2F and defeat the "Nekomancer" iconNekomancer and its four "Gremlin" iconGremlins to obtain the Star Sigil.

Once you have the Star Sigil, you will regenerate a moderate amount of MP every time you defend in battle - roughly 15-30 MP per round. Not a paltry sum, and spending a few turns guarding against weak and/or almost vanquished foes is a great way to recover MP during extended bouts of exploration!

(1 of 3) Visit Burrowell and after some scenes you’ll fight the Succubeast - be wary of its potent Hypnowhip attack!

Sun Sigil Location and Effects

Another Sigil can be found at the Shrine of Flames, which is located on a small island east of Burrowell and west of Zahan. Alas, the way to the Sun Sigil (up a ramp along the eastern edge of the Shrine of Flames map, is blocked, and before you can get the guards out of the way you’ll need to stop by Burrowell and complete the story events there - enter the city, enter the northeastern building and over hear the Town Guard Captain and the Town Chief arguing over their monster problem, making a meaningless choice between Peronel’s violent advocacy and Caradoc’s diplomatic approach, then defeat the "Succubeast" iconSuccubeast.

Be wary, as this boss can use "Hypnowhip" iconHypnowhip to deal heavy damage to the entire party, with a chance of inflicting confusion. Stick to single-target spells and abilities (buffing Gawain with Muster Strength and "Oomph" iconOomph is just begging for him to get confused at the worst possible moment and deal massive damage to your party), use defensive buffs and keep your health up. This will all go much easier if you recruited and leveled up Matilda before coming here! After the fight you’ll get some scenes, after which you’ll be in Burrowell. Rest at the inn for more scenes, then you can travel to the Shrine of Flames and present the "Letter from the Chief" iconLetter from the Chief you got after the fight with the Succubeast to the guards to get them to let you pass. Just head uphill and claim the Sun Sigil.

The Sun Sigil improves the critical hit rate of your attacks, as well as some abilities. You really can’t rely on this or plan around it - it’s too random - but it’s awfully nice when it procs!

Defeat the King of Dirkandor’s pets, finishing with the Striking Sabrecat,

and you’ll get the Moon Sigil!

Moon Sigil Location and Effects

A rather straight-forward Sigil, sail to the island housing Dirkandor, enter the castle and talk to the "King of Dirkandor" iconKing of Dirkandor and he’ll offer to reward you with the Moon Sigil… provided you can defeat the beasties he keeps caged up! First you’ll need to defeat 3x "Hades Condor" iconHades Condors, then 2x "Smackanape" iconSmackanapes and finally a "Striking Sabrecat" iconStriking Sabrecat - you will have time to rest between fights, so there’s no harm in trying. If you fail, go grind or come up with a new strategy! Win all three matches and you’ll be granted the Moon Sigil.

The Moon Sigil is much like the Sun Sigil, save that it randomly overcharges spells, including both offensive spells and recovery spells. Again, you can’t really rely on it, but it’s awfully nice when a Midheal overcharges and functionally becomes a full party heal, or a big offensive spell turns into… a bigger offensive spell!

(1 of 4) Square off against three bosses in the Den of Thieves - be wary of Wild Hog’s “Sweet Breath” attack, which can set up a painful “Persecutter” from the Surgical Spirit!

Water Sigil Location and Effects

One of the more complicated Sigils to get, you will need the Magic Key before you can go off in search of this one. Once this device is in hand, travel to the Deserted Village west of Moonahan and enter the westernmost house. If the quest that’ll lead to the Water Sigil is active, you’ll get some scenes where various party members fret about some imaginary haunting. In any event, enter the aforementioned house, go downstairs to reach the Den of Thieves.

After some scenes you’ll need to defeat a trio of bosses, including the "Wild Hog" iconWild Hog, "Pillager" iconPillager and "Surgical Spirit" iconSurgical Spirit. Be wary, as Wild Hog can put characters to sleep with Sweet Breath and Surgical Spirit can pick sleeping characters off with "Persecutter" iconPersecutter! They’re not terribly coordinated, and Surgical Spirit tends to attack first, meaning you should have a round to recover if anybody falls asleep - use "Sobering Slap" iconSobering Slap to wake afflicted characters up! You should also probably focus fire on a single enemy as much as possible (ideally either Wild Hog or Surgical Spirit) as the sooner one falls, the easier the fight will become. After this is done you’ll get the "Misplaced Key" iconMisplaced Key, which opens up the next phase of the quest!

Return to Moonahan and enter the building northwest of the Tombola Stall, which now has an interior instead of just warping you to an island to the west! Investigate a gate midway through this new underground passage and open it, then head through said gate and into a cavern beyond to trigger another scene, after which you’ll be in a fight with the "Sinister Minister" iconSinister Minister and its cadre of "Grimlin" iconGrimlins! Sinister Minister can hit hard in melee (especially if it softens up targets with "Helm Splitter" iconHelm Splitter) and revive its Grimlins with "Kazing" iconKazing, while the Grimlins will attempt to silence you with Fizzle and damage the part with Sizzle. Take them down and after the fight you’ll obtain the Water Sigil.

The Water Sigil boosts the efficacy of certain items, which changes the item’s description. For example, Medicinal Herbs go from healing 30 HP without the Water Sigil to healing 50 HP with it, and Antidotal Herbs initially cure one person of poison, but will cure poison for the entire party with the Water Sigil.

Defeat Mariella in the Den of Inequity,

and she’ll forfeit the Soul Sigil before fleeing.

Soul Sigil Location and Effects

Probably the Sigil you want to save for last, as it requires you to do the most work to get it. You’ll find the Soul Sigil in the Den of Inequity, which you can only reach after you clear the Mermaid’s Sanctuary dungeon. Dive under the sea south of Alefgard, clear the dungeon, and when you defeat "Mariella" iconMariella you’ll get the Soul Sigil. Mariella can summon adds, hit the party with "Kacrackle" iconKacrackle, and protect herself from magic with "Bounce" iconBounce - feeding Gawain buffs (Muster Strength/"Egg On" iconEgg On and Oomp) and letting him make big swings works well in this fight!

The Soul Sigil may just be the most potent Sigil in the game, although its effects are probably the most obtuse and require a bit of experimentation to figure out. When certain conditions are met a character can soup-up certain skills into more potent versions, altering their effects, generally increasing damage and costing a lot more MP in the process. The conditions required to trigger soup-ed skills vary by character, but generally being under 50% of their max HP or having a specific buff applied is the trigger - check out our page on Souped-Up Skills for more information. Souped-Up Skills are vastly important in the endgame, as they can produce effects no other skills can and help you win the action economy; effectively taking bigger swings exposes you to fewer enemy attacks, which can be the difference between a superlative victory or a shameful defeat!

Get the Pearl Earring from the Shipwreck to empower Lorelei’s Harp so you can dive deeper to reach the Shrine of Rubiss,

where you’ll have to defeat Atlas - not as monumental a feat as the monster’s namesake if you buff Gawain and let him chop the boss down to size!

Rousing Rubiss

Now that you have all five Sigils, you just need to wake up Rubiss, which requires a bit more work. First, you need to head to Cantlin and recover the Faerie Flute, which just requires a bit of teleporting around after the wayward First-Born Protector of Cantlin. You can do this a fair bit earlier in the game, during your hunt for the Sigils, if you prefer.

After defeating Mariella and getting the final Sigil, return to the Faerie Palace and chat with the Over-Seer to learn that you need to power up "Lorelei's Harp" iconLorelei’s Harp to reach the Shrine of Rubiss. Return to Mersea next and talk to the Queen of the Mermaids to learn - at length - exactly how said harp can be empowered. Next clear the rather simple Sunken Ship dungeon (not to be confused with the Ghost Ship) to get the "Pearl Earring" iconPearl Earring, which is the key to upgrading Lorelei’s Harp.

After a check-in with the Queen of the Mermaids you’ll be able to dive deep underwater and reach the Shrine of Rubiss, where only one more obstacle remains - defeating "Atlas" iconAtlas. "Buff" iconBuff Gawain with Oomph and Egg On and take heavy swings with "Cutting Edge" iconCutting Edge to chop through Atlas’s HP - the rest of the party can support with "Fullheal" iconFullheal/"Omniheal" iconOmniheal (Caradoc), "Kabuff" iconKabuff (Matilda) and Wild Side + Big Banga (Souped-Up "Kaboom" iconKaboom - Peronel). Defeat Atlas and venture deeper into the shrine to trigger scene with Rubiss, after which this trophy will finally pop!
