Where to Find Mini Medals¶
There are 40 Mini Medals in Dragon Quest 1: HD-2D Remake, and alas, they can be found in all sorts of places: in chests, pots, barrels - the most obvious spots for treasure to hide - but the odd Mini Medal can also be found in [Secret Areas] and in some cases as hidden treasures. You’ll need to be keen and thorough to find them all, but using spells and abilities like
Nose for Treasure (Dragon Quest I) and
Snoop (Dragon Quest I) can help alert you to when there’s treasure to be found nearby and make it easier to find hidden treasure on the ground. Or, you know, you can just use the list provided below. Simply put, keep an eye out, and if you don’t find them all by the time you reach the endgame, don’t fret - you don’t get Snoop until late-game and there are some Secret Areas that don’t appear until you’re nearly ready to confront the
Dragonlord.
Find the Citadel of the Monarch of Medals along the southwestern edge of the world map,
and inside you’ll find the Monarch of Medals, who will give you rewards in exchange for Mini Medals!
How to Exchange Mini Medals for Prizes¶
While you’ll find Mini Medals as soon as your first proper dungeon, you won’t be able to cash them in for any rewards until midgame. Press the story until you have an excuse (and the strength) to explore to the southwestern edge of the world map whereupon you’ll find the [Citadel of the Monarch of Medals]. Find the Monarch of Medals inside on his throne and talk to him and he’ll take whatever Mini Medals you have and give you rewards based on the cumulative total of Mini Medals you’ve collected. These rewards are as follows:
Search a bookshelf in the southeastern corner of the Citadel of the Monarch of Medals to find a list of the rewards you’ll get for turning in Mini Medals.
Mini Medal Rewards¶
| Rewards | Mini Medals |
|---|---|
| Prayer Ring | 5 |
| Scholar’s Specs | 8 |
| Wild Side Scroll | 10 |
| Glombolero | 12 |
| Dragon Shield | 15 |
| Swallowtail | 17 |
| Banishing Bell | 20 |
| Scourge Whip | 25 |
| Saviour’s Staff | 30 |
| 35 | |
| Metal Wing Boomerang | 37 |
| War Drum | 39 |
| Gringham Whip | 40 |
Not all of these are winners, and even the good gear you can get here has an expiration date - the sooner you get your hands on some of these weapons and armor, the more relevant they’ll be. The
Glombolero (Dragon Quest I) cuts MP costs by half, which makes is great midgame armor that just don’t have the defensive properties to hold up long-term and the
Swallowtail (Dragon Quest I) is an excellent midgame boomerang for when you can get it, for example. On the other hand, the
Wild Side Scroll (Dragon Quest I) is a must-have offensive tool that’ll serve you well throughout the rest of the game (being virtually mandatory for some fights!). The sooner you get your hands on these Mini Medals, the easier your adventure will be. To that end, here’s a list of all the Mini Medals in the game and their locations:
