Role-playing games have changed a lot over the years, and with them so have the expectations of modern gamers. The original Dragon Quest was comparatively primitive by modern standards, and instead of merely reheating a 40-year-old game and relying on nostalgia to carry the day, Square Enix has decided favor modernization over preservation with the remake of the first Dragon Quest game. All this to say, the hero in Dragon Quest 1: 2D-HD Remake has a vastly expanded arsenal of spells and abilities to help see them through the game, and unlike other Dragon Quest protagonists, since he’s on a solo adventure he’s got to be more well-rounded than other protagonists. This page will cover all the spells and abilities the hero can learn in Dragon Quest 1: 2D-HD Remake and how to obtain them.

Page Breakdown

Learning New Spells and Abilities

There are primarily two ways to learn new spells and abilities in Dragon Quest 1: 2D-HD Remake: leveling up and finding “Special Scrolls”, which will teach the hero new spells and abilities. Spells and abilities learned by leveling should be pretty self-explanatory - beat up baddies until you level up and you’ll earn the following skills at the indicated level:

You can learn a fair few spells and abilities by leveling up - you won’t get your last spell/skill until you hit Lv40 near the end of the game.

You can also learn spells and abilities from Special Scrolls, and unlike leveling you have to go seek these out. They can usually be found in chests or bookshelves across the game, and they count as standard treasure, meaning they can be detected with "Nose for Treasure (Dragon Quest I)" iconNose for Treasure (Dragon Quest I) - if you make sure you search every area thoroughly, you should find all or most of them, but their locations will be provided below, just in case:
