Over the course of the game you will find a significant collection of scrolls, which, when used, will teach your party members a variety of spells and abilities. If you’re a trophy/achievement hunter, you will need to “learn every spell and ability” in Dragon Quest 2: HD-2D Remake, to pop the Master of Arts trophy/achievement some of which you can only learn from scrolls. This page will suggest how to allocation your scrolls efficiently and how to unlock the Master of Arts trophy/achievement in Dragon Quest 2: HD-2D Remake!

Page Breakdown

(1 of 3) Over the course of your adventure you’ll find scrolls,

Best Scroll Allotment Choices

You have four characters, all of which will learn spells and abilities as they level up (more on this later), but in addition to the skills they learn natively, they can learn more by reading scrolls. Not every character can read every scroll, and in some cases, there are not enough scrolls for every eligible character to learn every spell/ability they have the potential to learn. The table below will list all the scroll types in the game, the characters who can use said scroll to learn its spell/ability, and whether there are enough scrolls for everybody:

As you can see, most scrolls in the game have enough copies for everybody, with only a few exceptions: "Assassin's Stab" iconAssassin’s Stab, Crack, Demon Demeaner, "Kaclang" iconKaclang, Kacrack, Padfoot, "Reheal" iconReheal, "Service Call" iconService Call, Undead Undoer, Wild Side and "Wind Sickles" iconWind Sickles. How you allocate these are, in many cases, inconsequential, but we’ll cover them all below:

  • Assassin’s Stab: An ability that can be learned by Caradoc and Matilda. Both are somewhat mediocre physical attackers, but this ability has a chance to instantly kill enemies struck, so we give it to Matilda due to her higher Luck stat.

  • Crack: A low-end, single-target ice spell that can be lared by Caradoc and Peronel both. Both will learn a much better ice spells ("Kacrackle" iconKacrackle), so this really only matters early-game, making it something of a coin toss.

  • Demon Demeaner: An offensive ability that can be learned by Gawain or Caradoc. Caradoc is an inferior damage-dealer and will probably be more focused on buffs and healing, so to Gawain it goes.

  • Kaclang: Caradoc and Peronel can both use this spell, which renders the entire party invulnerable but prevents them from acting for several turns. Since you won’t be performing any immediate followups, being too busy with other tasks isn’t really a factor here, so Caradoc is probably the better choice, since he’s more durable. You probably won’t even use this spell, however, as it’s best used to avoid specific enemy attacks, which can be mitigated or endured in ways that don’t require the use of this spell.

  • Kacrack: Can be learned by Caradoc and Peronel. Teaches Kacrack, which “skewers all enemies with a hail of sharp icicles”. Both have other spells that hit all enemies and both have a good Wisdom score and MP pool, and both can also learn Kacrackle, a superior version of this spell, so the allocation here doesn’t really matter. That said, Peronel will probably have more opportunities to cast this spell, since she’s the inferior healer.

  • Padfoot: Gawain, Caradoc and Peronel can learn this skill, which drastically reduces the encounter rate. Doesn’t really matter who casts this, as it’ll be exclusively used out of combat, but since Peronel has a larger MP pool, we give it to her.

  • Reheal: Learned natively by Matilda, it can also be learned by Caradoc and Peronel. Caradoc arguably needs it more, because it can be used to proc some of his Souped-Up Skills, but it can be cast on any party member. That said, you probably won’t be using these souped-up skills unless you also teach Caradoc Wild Side so he can use its souped-up variant, Divide. We’re not keen on using Caradoc as a damage-dealer, and he’ll probably spend most of his turns casting "Buff" iconBuff, "Kabuff" iconKabuff or "Omniheal" iconOmniheal, or using the War Drum. Still, he’s more likely to have the free turns to cast Reheal than Peronel will, so he gets it.

  • Service Call: Gawain and Matilda can both learn this ability, which “summons a wandering merchant, innkeeper or priest to your side”. You don’t get to choose which appears when you use this skill, but it can be useful to have a priest handy to resurrect fallen allies (especially if both Cardoc and Peronel are downed). Since this skill has a somewhat hefty MP cost of 15 each use, giving it to Matilda makes more sense, as she’s got a deeper MP pool.

  • Undead Undoer: Another physical attacking ability that targets a specific foe, ala Demon Demeaner, and just like that other skill, we prefer Gawain over Caradoc for the same reasons.

  • Wild Side: Perhaps the most contentious scroll in the game, Wild Side is a useful skill that causes a character to perform the same action twice when under this ability’s effects. Peronel learns it natively and Matilda can’t learn it at all, leaving Gawain and Caradoc to compete over it. For Caradoc’s part, if he learns this ability he can use the souped-up version, Divide, which repeats the same action three times per round. Each use of the copied ability has an MP cost, so Gawain’s MP pool might become a concern… but Caradoc will often spend his turns using Omniheal, which doesn’t benefit from being copied, and if he needs to doublecast Buff or Kabuff he can just wear a Duplic Hat. Gawain, on the other hand, is one of the party’s best DPS characters, and giving him Wild Side effectively doubles his offensive output. We’ll need to feed him Seeds of Magic, but Gawain’s upside is arguably greater than Caradoc’s, so he gets the scroll.

  • Wind Sickles: Hits a single enemy multiple times - this scroll can be used by both Matilda and Caradoc. Matilda already gets "Twin Dragon Lash" iconTwin Dragon Lash, which does a similar thing, but so does Caradoc with Falcon Slash and "Sword Dance" iconSword Dance. Flavor-wise, this seems a bit more appropriate to Caradoc, but it’s not a very powerful skill and neither are terribly useful late-game physical damage dealers, so it’s another coin toss.

(1 of 3) Some spells and abilities can be learned by leveling up,

Master of Arts - All Spells and Abilities

To earn the Master of Arts trophy/achievement, you will need to do two things: reach level 41-44 with all characters to get the skills they natively learn, and then use every unique scroll that teaches them spells and abilities they don’t learn by leveling up. You do not need to find every scroll in the game to unlock this achievement trophy, and technically you never have to reach Lv44 with Peronel, as you can learn "Channel Anger" iconChannel Anger from a scroll. [Defeating "Xenlon" iconXenlon] without making it to Lv44 isn’t terribly likely, but hey, it’s plausible. As long as a single character in your party a spell/ability it counts, and this trophy/achievement should pop when your party collectively knows every unique spell and ability in the game. That being the case, let’s list these spells and abilities and determine whether they are learned by leveling up, a scroll, or both, so you know exactly what you need to do to unlock this trophy/achievement!

Spells and abilities you learn by leveling up you don’t have to worry about - play through the game and you should get them eventually. So you can ignore everything with a “–” entry under the “Level Up” column for the purposes of unlocking the Master of Arts trophy/achievement. That means you need the scrolls for the following skills: Assassin’s Stab, "Bazoom" iconBazoom, "Bounce" iconBounce, "Critical Claim" iconCritical Claim, "Defizzle" iconDefizzle, Demon Demeaner, "Fog of War" iconFog of War, "Hypnowhip" iconHypnowhip, Kaclang, Kerplunk, "Lightning" iconLightning, "Metal Slash" iconMetal Slash, "Multislice" iconMultislice, Padfood, "Power Puff-Puff" iconPower Puff-Puff, "Propeller Blade" iconPropeller Blade, "Puff-Puff" iconPuff-Puff, Ripple of Destruction, Service Call, Snoop, Snub, "Soothing Song" iconSoothing Song, "Spooky Aura" iconSpooky Aura, "Steal Sickle" iconSteal Sickle, Sword Dance, Undead Undoer, Wind Sickles and "Zin" iconZin.

Finally note that the Puff-Puff and Power Puff-Puff abilities are different for Gawain and Matilda - you must get both copies of these scrolls and have both Gawain and Peronel learn them, so you will have to [defeat Xenlon] at least two times to get two copies of the "Power Puff-Puff Scroll" iconPower Puff-Puff Scroll. No other skills function like this - in most other cases you only need one copy of a spell/ability across the entire party.

Hit Lv41-44 with each character and have them learn at least one copy of each spell or ability they can’t get from leveling by using scrolls, including both versions of Puff-Puff and Power Puff-Puff and you should unlock the Master of Arts trophy/achievement!
