If there’s one name you’re going to hear a lot over the course of Dragon Quest 1: HD-2D Remake, it’s Erdrick. Practically all anybody can talk about! Famous guy. Did some things back in the day. Everybody likes him. As an aspiring hero seeking to follow in the footsteps of your legendary ancestor, you’ve got some big shoes to fill, and what better way to do that than by literally filling them with your own feet? At the very least it’s bound to make your claim of being the “Scion of Erdrick” more believable by donning the panoply of your world-saving forebearer… not to mention it’s some of the best gear in the game! This page will cover where to find every bit of Erdrick’s gear in Dragon Quest 1: HD-2D Remake and in so doing unlock the trophy/achievement “Erdrick’s Legacy”.

Page Breakdown

There are four pieces of Erdrick’s gear in Dragon Quest 1: HD-2D Remake: armour, helm, shield and sword, and since it’s all arguably best-in-slot equipment (situational weapon needs notwithstanding) you shouldn’t be surprised to learn that Erdrick’s gear will be found in the latter half of the game. Their locations and effects can be found below:

Defeat the Knight Aberrant - a truly fearsome foe!,

then search near a tree to find Erdrick’s Armour.

Erdrick’s Armour

Technically the first bit of Erdrick’s gear you can find, it’s located in the ruins of Damdara. Functionally, however, you’re better off waiting a fair bit before you attempt to get it, as it’s defended by the "Knight Aberrant" iconKnight Aberrant, an optional boss that gives more EXP than any other enemy in the game save for one. Needless to say, it’s fairly strong, and you’ll want to be, too, before you challenge it.

To find it you’ll need to head to the southeastern corner of the walled part of Damdara (not the southeastern part of the area map - the ruined city walls should be easy to spot on and off the map), cross a poisonous swamp, and head north until the Knight Aberrant appears. Defeat it, then search near a tree to the northwest to find Erdrick’s Armor.

This armor gives you 118 Defence, causes you to regenerate HP as you walk, renders you immune to poisonous swamps and electrified tiles, and reduces damage from all spells and breath attacks.

Erdrick’s Shield can be found in a green chest in the Weeping Isle - Exterior map. You need the Ultimate Key to open this chest.

Erdrick’s Shield

One of the easier pieces of Erdrick’s gear to obtain, you can find it in the Weeping Isle - Exterior area. Every map in this dungeon is fragmented, but you don’t really need to worry about it much, since it’s also linear, aside for one instance. Advance through the dungeon until you exit out into the southern part of the Weeping Isle - Exterior map, which has three exits. You’ll need to work your way west, south, east and north to the southernmost of these three exits to reach the westernmost part of the Weeping Isle - Exterior map, where you’ll need to head east and north to reach a chamber where you’ll find two chests to the west. This shield is in the northernmost of these two chests, which requires the [Ultimate Key] tu unlock, so you won’t be able to get it on your first visit.

This shield protects you to the tune of 85 Defence while also reducing incoming damage from spells and breath attacks.

(1 of 3) To get Erdrick’s Helm you’ll need to progress through most of Zalen’s quest - start out by talking to Zalen at various locations throughout Alefgard,

Erdrick’s Helm

A rather out-of-the-way bit of gear, you’ll need to get to near the end of the Zalen questline - and the game - to get it. Check out the linked page for more details, but for a quick rundown you’ll need to find and talk to Zalen at the following locations:

  • Forgotten Ruins
  • Nameless Ruins
  • Damdara
  • Cantline
  • Galenholm

After this, do the following:

  • Travel to the Field of Flowers to trigger a scene
  • Return to the Shrine of Rain and talk to Dream-Whisperer

Once that’s all done you’ll be teleported to the Western Isle location, where you’ll get another scene. Following the scene, pick up Erdrick’s Helm from atop the grave it stood vigil on and place it over your own head to enjoy 76 Defence, resistance to sleep, confusion, bedazzlement, paralysis and instant death and a boost to the potency of your lightning spells and abilities.

Descend into the depths of the Dragonlord’s Castle - B3, then go up some stairs along the western edge of the map,

and ascend to reach an otherwise isolated part of the Dragonlord’s Castle - B1, where you’ll find Erdrick’s Sword embedded in the floor.

Erdrick’s Sword

The last piece of Erdrick’s gear you’ll have access to, it lies in the bowels of the ["Dragonlord" iconDragonlord’s Castle]. You’ll find it on the Dragonlord’s Castle - B1 level, but to reach it you’ll need to descend down to Dragonlord’s Castle - B4, a level with five sets of stairs in it. Go up the stairs that are second from the left to reach the middle part of Dragonlord’s Castle - B3. From here go up the stairs to the east to reach Dragonlord’s Castle - B2, then go up a winding flight of carpeted stairs to reach the otherwise inaccessible central part of Dragonlord’s Castle - B1. Go sound and you’ll find this sword embedded in the floor, begging for a true here to free it and wield it against evil.

Indulge the sword and it’ll grant you 140 Attack, making it the strongest weapon in the game. It can also be used in battle to summon a whirlwind, damaging a group of enemies. It has infinite uses.

Gird yourself in the relics once worn and wielded by Erdrick, your birthright, and you should unlock the achievement/trophy “Erdrick’s Legacy”.
