You might come across some bosses in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake that can be a bit more trouble than usual. One such boss is the "Lunagriff" iconLunagriff found at the top of the Tower of the Moon dungeon. He can be quite the nuisance, due to his ability to heal, as well as pummel you with various status effects that prevent you from performing actions. This page will go over all of the Lunagriff’s attacks, as well as how to clip his wings and defeat him.

You’ll fight Lunagriff at the top of Tower of the Moon.

Lunagriff’s Attacks

Lunagriff has a number of different attacks in his arsenal, some of which only seem to show up once you get him to the different HP thresholds.

  • Desperate Attack: A critical hit on a single party member.
  • Fizzle: Attempts to seal your party’s ability to use spells.
  • Burning Breath: Chance to inflict Paralysis on the entire party.
  • "Kaswoosh" iconKaswoosh: Wind-elemental damage to the entire party.
  • Propellor Blade: Single target attack that hits twice, one of which is wind-element.
  • Miracle Moon: Hits all party for medium damage, as well as heal the boss four times.
  • Weakening Wave: Debuffs the entire party’s attack by one level.

Lunagriff Boss Strategy

To say that some luck is involved with the battle against Lunagriff is a bit of an understatement. However, you can try to push some of that luck to go in your favor by blasting the boss with everything you have, as the longer the battle goes on, the more of a chance that this creature can screw you over. For the first part of the battle, one of the biggest problems will be Kaswoosh, which can deal upwards of 80 damage to your entire party. Of course, you can negate some of the damage this spell does by using Magic Barrier.

(1 of 4) Kaswoosh is a wind spell that he’ll use often, so keep Magic Barrier active.

In fact, you should always have Magic Barrier active during the fight, but it’s something that might not be up to you. The reason for this is because Lunagriff can block your party from using spells with Fizzle, plus he can also inflict Paralysis with Burning Breath. You can circumvent the Paralysis by equipping Full Moon Rings to each character, but that doesn’t offer full protection to the ailment. Additionally, there are Banishing Bells (should have to at this point), accessories that offer some small resistance to every ailment. The only one that doesn’t matter is Fizzle hitting the Hero, as he cannot even use spells in the first place.

Also annoying is the fact that Lunagriff likes to trigger Desperate Attacks, which are essentially critical hits. Combine this with the other single-target attack, Propellor Blade, and some characters with lower max HP might be close to death from the pair. The real pain begins whenever you get Lunagriff to low enough HP (yellow name), as he’ll start using Miracle Moon now. This attack can deal upwards of 80-90 damage to the party, but the more annoying aspect is it also heals the boss for a percentage of the damage done. Depending on the damage you do, this could be bad, but at this point, your damage output should really outpace the healing.

Regarding the damage you should be doing, the Hero is likely your main dealer of said damage. Depending on the level of your Hero, he either has "Multifists" iconMultifists (36) or even "Cutting Edge" iconCutting Edge (41). If you don’t have either of those, then it’s a good idea to have Demon Demeaner via the scroll, since Lunagriff is one of those. Have Peronel cast "Oomph" iconOomph on the Hero, and if you have "Egg On" iconEgg On on Matilda, then use that on him as well. If the latter isn’t true, then you can have him use Egg On himself before unleashing a big attack. With those two spells/abilities, Demon Demeaner should be doing 700-800 damage to the boss.

(1 of 3) Demon Demeaner is a great choice for your main source of damage on the boss.

At this point, this will be the strategy for most bosses coming up after this one. "Buff" iconBuff the damage multipliers on the Hero, while the rest of the party supports, usually in the form of "Multiheal" iconMultiheal, "Kabuff" iconKabuff, Magic Barrier, and any other applicable spells/abilities. The only caveat is using Peronel to use a Souped-Up "Kaboom" iconKaboom (if unlocked) to cast Big Banga.

With the boss finally downed, you will receive a big amount of experience, plus Matilda will nab the "Moonshard" iconMoonshard. Return to Burrowell to learn what Elmoo has discovered, and if you haven’t done it yet, you can go to Dirkandor for another boss fight.
