Thief's Key Location - Thief's Key Treasure Chests
Unlocking the Ship in Dragon Quest II
While the Pillar of the Winds isn’t the first dungeon you will encounter in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake, it’s probably the first one that can be confusing to navigate, let alone get all the treasures inside of it. You will need to come here after the Moonbrooke little arc, as you require the
Windbraker to continue your journey. This page will focus on how to get to the Pillar of the Winds, as well as how to get all of the treasures within.
Pillar of the Winds Location¶
The Pillar of the Winds dungeon is found to the southeast of Moonahan, but it’s not a direct path to get to it, as you need to go a roundabout way to get to it. You will start off by going to Moonahan, then exiting the town and heading straight east from it. When you get to the bridge there, don’t cross it, but instead venture north from it. Go across the bridge to the north you find, then start heading south, along the mountains. There is a Secret Spot along the way, so don’t hesitate to go inside to find some goodies.
The path you need to take from Moonahan to the Pillar of the Winds dungeon.
At the next bridge, go across it and continue with the next three bridges, until you come to a desert. From here, it’s not too much longer to find the dungeon, as it’s a straight shot to the west. It’s also hard to miss the giant tower on the world map, so you’re not going to not see it at all here.
Pillar of the Winds Treasures - 1F¶
| Treasure | Location |
|---|---|
| Holy Water | Inside a barrel in the southwest corner |
| Seed of Magic | Inside a barrel in the southwest corner |
| Ruby Wristband | Search the ground for a hidden item in the northwest corner |
| Cower Ring | Inside a chest in the northeastern room |
| 192 gold coins | Inside a chest in the northeastern room |
There are five treasures that you can get right away on the first floor of this dungeon, one of which is completely hidden. The Holy Water and Gold Coins aren’t anything special, but the Seed of Magic is always good to have, since you can use it to increase Peronel’s magic, if it needs a bigger boost. You’ll want to be careful with the Cower Ring, though, as it is cursed and should you equip it, you will need to go to a church to remove it. The Agility boost doesn’t offset the debuff it gives to you, so ignore it (you’ll get a better version of this later that isn’t cursed).
The hidden item is the Ruby Wristband, located in the northwestern corner of the floor. Investigate the center of the square tile on the right side to uncover the treasure. This is a decent accessory, although it only offers a modest boost to defense. When you’re done, take the stairs in either the southwest corner, or the ones in the middle of the floor, to reach the second floor.
There is an invisible treasure on the first floor that contains a Ruby Wristband.
Check this pot on the second floor for a Mini Medal.
Pillar of the Winds Treasures - 2F¶
| Treasure | Location |
|---|---|
| Mini Medal | Inside a pot in the small room west of the treasure chest in the northeast |
| Thorn Whip | Found inside a chest in the northeast |
Of the two normal treasures on this floor, the Mini Medal is the bigger prize, since you can turn them in to get really good stuff at the end of the game. The Thorn Whip might be nice, although it’s possible you have better equipment at this stage of the game. There’s only one set of stairs to go to the next floor.
Pillar of the Winds Treasures - 3F¶
| Treasure | Location |
|---|---|
| Magic Water x2 | In a pot in the northeast corner |
| Chimaera Wing | In a pot in the northeast corner |
| Seed of Wisdom | In a pot in the northeast corner |
There’s not really much to say about the items found on this floor, although you always want seeds, so grab the Seed of Wisdom. The other two items aren’t anything too important. Find the only stairs here to go up to the fourth floor.
Pillar of the Winds Treasures - 4F¶
| Treasure | Location |
|---|---|
| Seed of Magic | Examine the plate on the ground in the central room at the top |
| Inside a hard-to-see pot next to a brazier in the northeast room |
Another seed (Seed of Magic) is found here, so pick it up, then grab the
Tombola Tickets from the slightly hidden pot in the northeast. While they may seem unimportant, you can get some nice stuff from the various Tombola Stalls throughout the game. Take the only set of stairs to get to the fifth floor now.
The Wind Sickles Scroll on the fifth floor can teach one of your characters a new ability.
Pillar of the Winds Treasures - 5F¶
| Treasure | Location |
|---|---|
| Found in a chest between the pillars in the northeast room | |
| 792 Gold Coins | Found inside a chest near the southern wall |
Of the two treasures on this floor, the
Wind Sickles Scroll is the most valuable one to get here. You can teach the named skill to one of your characters, which will give them more offensive options during battle. You’ll also need this because you require every spell and ability for a trophy/achievement.
Pillar of the Winds Treasures - 6F¶
| Treasure | Location |
|---|---|
| None | – |
From this path, there is nothing you will be able to find on this floor, but you will see four sets of stairs that lead to the 7th floor. The only ones that matter are the stairs in the southwest and southeast.
Pillar of the Winds Treasures - 7F¶
| Treasure | Location |
|---|---|
| Inside a chest; Accessible from the stairs in the southwest on 6F | |
| Mini Medal | Inside a barrel; Accessible from the stairs in the southeast on 6F |
Both treasures here, when you use the correct set of stairs on 6F, are important here. The
Zin Scroll is good for teaching its respective move to someone, while the Mini Medal is needed to get good stuff later on. There’s nothing else to do up here, or along this optional path, so for story purposes, return to the very first floor (can use Evac to exit and re-enter the dungeon).
Take the southwest stairs on 6F to reach this chest with the Zin Scroll.
The southeastern stairs on 6F will take you to a Mini Medal.
Pillar of the Winds Treasures - Story Path¶
| Treasure | Location |
|---|---|
| Agility Ring | Inside a chest the southeast room (3F) |
| Inside a pot in the northeastern corner (6F) | |
| Strong Medicine | Inside a pot in the northeastern corner (6F) |
| TangleWeb | Inside a barrel along the central wall, on the southern side (6F) |
| 58 Gold Coins | Inside a barrel along the central wall, on the southern side (6F) |
| Inside the chest after fighting the boss (3F) | |
| Story item obtained on 2F after defeating the boss |
After arriving back on the first floor, go to the northeastern corner and take the stairs there to find yourself in a different section of the second floor. Be careful from this point onward, as there will be a lot of instances where you can fall off the tower, either putting you back at the beginning or to the previous floor. So, stay away from the edges and you’ll be fine. On the third floor (nothing on the second), go down the left side, through the door and grab the Agility Ring from the chest, a great piece of equipment for someone like the main character, who is a bit slower than the others.
The Agility Ring is a great accessory for the main character, as he can be slow.
The reason you came into this dungeon is for the Windbraker.
There are two exits on the fourth floor, both leading to the fifth. Ignore the center one and go up the southeastern one. Keep following this path to the sixth floor, where you grab some items from the pots and barrels. Return to the fourth floor and climb the central stairs for a boss fight. After defeating the boss, descend the stairs behind him and get the
Top Hat from the 3F chest, then go down one more floor to find the item you came here for, the Windbraker.
