The Infection status plays a massive role in Atomfall, both in the story and the gameplay as you explore the areas around Wyndham. You’ll most likely encounter a Feral early on in your adventure, but later, as you delve into the deepest reaches of the Interchange, you’ll have to traverse through areas thick with spores from the Infection. Naturally, you’ll take damage in these areas, but there is a way to gain resistance to the status, keep reading to learn how!
You can find resistance to the Infection status in Atomfall.

Experimental Inoculation Location¶
As mentioned above, Infection will start to become more of an obstacle as you delve deeper into the mysteries of the Interchange in Atomfall, and although there is a way to recover from the status using a consumable item known as a Strange Tonic by completing Mother Jago’s Herbalism Book quest, this is only a temporary reprieve from the effects of Infection.
Instead, you’ll want to get your hands on the Experimental Inoculation, when used, this will grant you the
Infection Resistance skill, along with also unlocking the
Healing Boost and
Radiation Resistance skills, very handy! It’s going to take a bit of work, unfortunately, to get your hands on this illusive item, however.
(1 of 2) The Medical section of the Interchange can be found to the west of the map via Data Store Charlie.
The Medical section of the Interchange can be found to the west of the map via Data Store Charlie. (left), The Church Cellar Key can be found in The Interchange’s Medical department. (right)
Begin by heading to the Interchange and unlocking Medical, this requires a minimum of two Atomic Batteries (one of which can be found in the Central Processing Unit when you first get there), the easiest one to find is by heading to Trader Molly in Slatten Dale (26.3E, 79.0N) and trading for it with her, the Charisma skill will help here. Once you have the Batteries, return to Data Store Charlie (the southwest section from the center of the Interchange), use the battery to provide power, and then go across to the opposite building, up the stairs to the top, and into Medical.
Once there, you’ll need to tale take the path to the left, follow it to the end, and then duck through a crawl space to reach the Wards. Head all the way to wall at the back and you’ll find a dead end that leads to the Church Cellar Key.
With this key in hand, you can now make your way over to Wyndham Village and enter the church found to the southwest of the area. Inside, you’ll find some stairs that lead down and at the end, the Church Cellar that requires the key you just looted (Map Marker. You’ll find Dr. Holder inside, one of the key characters that gives you a quest to escape the quarantine zone. More importantly, he’ll let you use the Experimental Inoculation near where he’s standing, so long as you agree to assist him (you don’t have to go through with this). Once used, you’ll find yourself now resistance to Infection and can explore the deeper reaches of the Interchange without fear.
The Experimental Inoculation is yours for helping Dr. Holder, granting you resistance to Infection when taken.
Infection Effects¶
Now that you know how to gain resistance against Infection (or temporarily cure it with Strange Tonics), you may be wondering what the full effects of Infection actually are. Whenever you come into contact with a Feral, or walk through the spore clouds found in some areas, the Infection gauge (represented by a triangle in the corner of your screen) will begin to fill. Once full, you’ll take constant damage over time, certain Infection plants (found in the areas with the spore clouds) will explode when approached, and your Heart Rate (which is effectively your Stamina) will stay elevated, meaning you’ll be out of breath a lot quicker.
All said and done, Infection is a nasty status effect that will really hamper your ability to explore the deepest reaches of the Interchange or fight back against enemies. Regardless of whether you decide to pursue Dr. Holder’s route or not, we highly suggest you get the Experimental Inoculation as soon as possible.
