First Meeting - Main Gate Cross, Gravesite Plain¶
Your first meeting with Ansbach will be at the Main Gate Cross site of Grace near the entrance to Belurat, Tower of Settlement. Reaching this place can be done by following the path north in Gravesite Plain until you reach an intersection. To the west of the intersection is the Three-Path Cross site of Grace, where you’ll find Hornsent. Speak to them to receive a map depicting three of Miquella’s Crosses. From there, take the western path that eventually heads north, and you’ll find the site of Grace along with Moore and Sir Ansbach.
Once you’ve reached Ansbach, speak to him to find out his fighting days are over with his time now spent on his current investigation. After exhausting his dialogue, you’ll learn that there are more Miquella’s Crosses than what’s been displayed on the map you received from Hornsent at the Three-Path Cross site of Grace. In fact, he mentioned six when the map only displayed three of them. This leads to him asking you to report back to him whenever you find one of Miquella’s Crosses.
While you’re here, you may as well speak to the heavily-clad knight, Moore to start his side quest as you can speak to Ansbach about him afterward for some lore on him. Each time you visit one of Miquella’s Crosses (normally by a site of Grace), you can return to Ansbach for additional dialogue options. The Crosses Ansbach is particularly interested in are:
- Belurat, Tower of Settlement Miquella’s Cross, at the Stagefront site of Grace.
- Scadu Altus Miquella’s Cross, at the Scaduview site of Grace.
- Cerulean Coast Miquella’s Cross, at the Cerulean Coast Cross site of Grace.
As the first one on the list is Belurat, let’s start with that.
Second Meeting - Belurat, Tower of Settlement Miquella’s Cross¶
Belurat is a legacy dungeon situated to the north of where you are now (where Ansbach is). This is a large sprawling dungeon and you must make your way through it until you reach the Stagefront site of Grace, which is outside of the boss room at the end of the dungeon. You’ll find the Cross at the base of the tower (the room with giant scorpions) where you’ll find a doorway obscured by the broken walls and rubble.
The doorway is to the right of the scorpion room if you’re entering it, and left if exiting. This will lead to a room full of Manflies. Defeat them and head into the next room where you’ll find a Scadutree Fragment and the Miquella’s Cross. Interact with the nearby Miquella’s Cross, head back to Ansbach, and select “speak of the cross at the tower.” This will unveil new information regarding Miquella and you’ll find out that he is attempting to gain entrance to the tower of Shadow, also known as Shadow Keep, which will be your next stop.
Third Meeting - Approaching Shadow Keep¶
Although you are led to the Shadow Keep, this is only so you break the Great Rune. Note that this will drastically affect all the NPCs and their quests, so make sure you’ve taken each one to the point it needs to be at. Check out our NPC walkthroughs at the bottom of the page to know what you need to do. The journey to Shadow Keep isn’t a short one as you’ll need to head through Castle Ensis to reach the Shadow Keep.
Teleport to the Three-Path Cross site of Grace, and head over the Ellac Greatbridge to the northeast of it. This will take you to Castle Enis. Castle Enis isn’t as long as Belurat, but it will still take a bit of time to get through it as well as defeating a challenging boss at the end of it. Make your way through the castle, and after you defeat the boss, exit it, and take the path north. As you head north, stop off at the Highroad Cross site of Grace to the right of the path to find both Needle Knight Leda and Hornsent if you want to carry on with their quests.
When you’re ready, continue taking the path north, and as you begin to approach the Keep, you’ll hear a large shatter-like sound followed by a message mentioning that the Great Rune has been destroyed. Once you’ve acquired this message, teleport back to Ansbach, and speak to him. It appears his views regarding Miquella have drastically changed, and this will be the same with the other NPCs. The reason for this is that the Great Rune was enchanting them into thinking of Miquella as some kind of deity, but with the shroud lifted from them, their views are the complete opposite with Ansbach even calling him a “monster”. Exhaust the dialogue with Ansbach and eventually, he’ll tell you he wants to run away as far as possible. After this, Ansbach will move on to Shadow Keep.
Fourth Meeting - Storehouse, First Floor, Shadow Keep¶
Make your way back to Shadow Keep and progress through it until you reach the Main Gate Plaza site of Grace, not too far from the entrance. Now, head through the archway to the left of the grace, and continue up all the stairs until you reach the battlements with the “burning boats”. Halfway across the battlements, you’ll be able to go up some stairs to the north leading to a tower. In the tower, you’ll find an elevator that will take you to the Specimen Storehouse.
Once the elevator reaches the top, go up the stairs and activate the Storehouse, First Floor site of Grace. Ansbach can be found in a room in the northeast of this floor, so navigate around the left of the chimera centerpiece, and continue north/northeast until you go over a small set of stairs leading to the northeast. Take a left between the bookcases and then immediately turn right to find an archway leading to the room. Ansbach will be at the back of the room, in the corner.
Speak to Ansbach who’ll tell you that he wants to make a fresh start and after you press the issue, he’ll tell you that Mohg’s body was given to Miquella. Feeling that this is somewhat his fault, he wants to make up for it. Speak to him again, and he’ll begin ruminating on what to do with Mohg’s body.
Fifth Meeting - Storehouse, Fourth Floor, Shadow Keep¶
Progress through the Storehouse until you reach the Storehouse, Fourth Floor site of Grace. At the Grace, you’ll find a note on the desk to the right of Miquella’s Cross. Pick it up to obtain the Storehouse Cross message that reads:
“It would seem that the people of the keep have flooded the holy quarter that leads onward to the Scadutree, barring access. However, there is no route that leads there from this storehouse. Perhaps there is another way to reach the holy quarter, from somewhere else in this keep…”
If you are doing Redmane Freyja’s Quest head to the Storehouse, Seventh Floor, and do her part of the quest before continuing as you want to speak to her before handing over the Secret Rite Scroll, which is your next objective for Ansbach.
Sixth Meeting: Secret Rite Scroll - Storehouse, Fourth Floor, Shadow Keep¶
Exit the room via the balcony to the west of the site of Grace and head south up the stairs. Continue south up the next set of stairs, past the Fire Knight, where you’ll find some stairs heading down to your left. Go down the stairs, into the room, and check out the desk behind the large bookcase in the northeast corner to find the Secret Rite Scroll. Head back to Ansbach at the Storehouse, First Floor, and before handing over the scroll, make sure you’ve spoken to Redmane Freyja on the Seventh Floor as this next step will change things for her.
After you’ve done this, you’ll have a choice to hand over the scroll to Ansbach. If you don’t hand over the scroll, his quest ends here, so hand over the scroll, and he’ll tell you that he’s gotten the answers he needs.
Leda Vs Ansbach Battle¶
If you help Leda (or skip the fight) against Hornsent earlier, but still summoned Hornsent for the Messmer battle, Leda will target Ansbach. If this is the case, head over to the Storehouse, First Floor where you’ll find two summoning signs. Selecting the red sign will help Leda while choosing the gold sign will help Ansbach. Naturally, for Ansbach’s quest, you’ll want to help him, but you will get rewards for helping Leda too. Here is what will happen depending on who you help.
Helping Ansbach (Gold Sign)¶
Summoning and helping Ansbach will reward you with the following:
- Leda’s Rune (40,000 Runes)
- Ansbach’s Longbow
- Ansbach can be summoned for two future boss fights with one being the final battle.
Helping Leda (Red Sign)¶
Summoning and helping Leda will reward you with the following:
- Wise Man’s Mask
- Ansbach’s Attire
- Ansbach’s Manchettes
- Ansbach’s Boots
- Ansbach’s Longbow
- Retaliatory Crossed-Tree Talisman
- Ansbach is not summonable for the future fights
- Ansbach quest ends
Final Meeting - Divine Gate Front Staircase, Enir-Ilim¶
Handing over the Secret Rite Scroll to Ansbach means he’ll help you during the Leda and Allies battle in the room following the Cleansing Room Antechamber site of Grace. Having Ansbach in this battle makes the battle significantly easier as you could be facing up to five foes at once. If you defeat Leda and her allies while having Sir Ansbach summoned, you’ll find him at the Divine Gate Front Staircase site of Grace. Talk to him about Mohg’s death and he’ll tell you that he knows it was you that defeated Mohg and that he bears no ill will to you for it. Having this conversation allows you to summon him against the final boss of the DLC.
Upon defeating the boss with Ansbach, head back to the Divine Gate Front Staircase site of Grace to find his body to the northeast of it. You can loot this to acquire the following items:
- Obsidian Lamina
- Furious Blade of Ansbach
- Ansbach’s Longbow
- Wise Man’s Mask
- Ansbach’s Attire
- Ansbach’s Manchettes
- Ansbach’s Boots
