Using Candies

(1 of 2) L and XL candy won’t work if your Pokémon’s Level isn’t high enough.

L and XL candy won’t work if your Pokémon’s Level isn’t high enough. (left), After a while, the lower quality candies won’t be enough to boost a Pokémon’s AVs. (right)

So you’ve hopefully got a big sack of candies. Surely eating these sugary snacks should be a cinch? Well, you’re half right. Turns out, there are a few restrictions on the candies a Pokémon can eat. In addition, certain candies can only be used up to a certain amount of AVs.

Restrictions

Candy Level Requirement AV Limit
Standard Candy 1+ Up to 50
L Candy 30+ Up to 100
XL Candy 60+ Up to 200
Species Candy 1+ Up to 200

For example, you can only feed Health Candy L to a "Raichu" IconRaichu that’s Level 30 or higher. Once that Pokémon has reached 100 AVs in HP, you can’t use any more Health Candy L on it. Instead, you have to use Health Candy XL or "Pikachu" IconPikachu Candy.

Ratio of Candies to AVs

Each time you feed a Pokémon a candy, its corresponding AV will increase by 1 (which also corresponds to a stat increase of 1). As you gain more AVs in that stat, the Pokémon will start requiring multiple candies and/or higher-quality candies.

The following table lists how much candy you need to reach the next amount of AVs.

AVs Standard L Candy XL Candy
1 to 10 1 1 1
11 to 14 2 1 1
15 to 17 3 1 1
18 to 20 4 1 1
21 to 22 5 1 1
23 to 24 6 1 1
25 to 26 7 1 1
27 to 28 8 1 1
29 to 30 9 1 1
31 10 1 1
32 to 33 11 1 1
34 12 1 1
35 to 36 13 1 1
37 14 1 1
38 15 1 1
39 to 40 16 1 1
41 to 42 17 1 1
43 to 45 18 1 1
46 to 47 19 1 1
48 to 50 20 1 1
51 to 57 - 2 1
58 to 75 - 3 1
76 to 100 - 4 1
101 to 153 - - 2
154 to 158 - - 3
159 to 164 - - 4
165 to 169 - - 5
170 to 174 - - 6
175 to 179 - - 7
180 to 183 - - 8
184 to 187 - - 9
188 to 192 - - 10
193 to 196 - - 11
197 to 200 - - 12

To clarify, you can only feed a Pokémon one type of candy at once, so only one column of candies is applicable at one time. As the amount of AVs increases, it eventually gets to the stage where certain lower-quality candies cannot increase the AVs at all. Also, early on, it’s not a waste to feed Pokémon higher-quality candy.

Species Candy

Using species candy is no hassle at all, but acquiring them is slightly tougher.

When feeding Pokémon their species candy, they will gain 1 AV in all 6 stats, regardless of Level or AVs already gained. Species candy applies to all Pokémon from that “family” (themselves and their evolutions). Unless you have an excess of species candy, it’s usually a good idea to save them for the end, after using a bunch of L and XL candies.
