Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! & Let's Go, Eevee!

Introduction

By
Vincent Lau

Starting from this section, we’ll be going over some things that only experienced Pokémon trainers will be interested in knowing. For the most part, this information isn’t necessary to play through or enjoy the game, although it can make it easier.

Firstly, have you ever been curious about what determines a Pokémon’s precise stats? Sure, your "Mewtwo" IconMewtwo might have blistering high Special Attack, but why does it differ slightly from another Mewtwo that’s the exact same Level? Also, what makes a "Golem" IconGolem so much slower than a "Rapidash" IconRapidash?

Basic Concept

(1 of 2) Golem generally have high defensive stats, but low Speed.

Golem generally have high defensive stats, but low Speed. (left), Meanwhile, Rapidash are the opposite, boasting high Speed, but poor defensive stats. (right)

If you’ve been pondering those kinds of questions, it’s a good idea to review the facts, starting with the most obvious ones. Naturally, a Pokémon’s Level will have a large impact on their stats. On the far extreme, a Level 1 Pokémon can’t hold a candle towards one that’s Level 100.

Next, a Pokémon’s species has a large contribution to their stats. We just mentioned comparing a super-slow Golem with a speedy Rapidash. But you’ll also notice this when looking at unevolved and evolved Pokémon. Meanwhile, Legendary Pokémon (especially the likes of Mewtwo) may have superior stats still.

Now onto less obvious factors. A Pokémon’s Nature may affect their stats. If a Pokémon’s stat is colored red, this means the stat is increased by 10% due to their Nature. Conversely, a blue-colored stat means it’s decreased by 10%. When there are no colored stats, it means the Nature has a neutral (no) effect.

Generally, each individual Pokémon will have slightly different stats, even when they’re of the same species, at the same Level and after accounting for their Nature. This is done to create a sense of individuality, so not every "Rattata" IconRattata you catch is the same–otherwise, it’d be kind of boring!

New to Let’s Go, Pokémon you’ve fed stat-boosting candy will have higher stats than those you’ve just caught. This is the replacement for EVs in other games. Last but not least, a Pokémon’s Happiness provides a percentage boost to their stats. Previously, Happiness only affected the damage output of certain moves, but now it affects everything they do!
