In Chapter 5 of Like a Dragon: Ishin you’ll get a tutorial about Battle Dungeons. Once the tutorial has been completed, you will be able to use them at your leisure. Battle Dungeons somewhat ties in with the story as you’ll be the Third Division Captain, and you’ll take your squad (Trooper Cards) into the Battle Dungeons to level them up, and earn unique rewards.
The last mission in a Battle Dungeon will have you face a challenging boss.
How to Start Battle Dungeons¶
As stated above, you’ll need to unlock it first by progressing the story until you get the tutorial in Chapter 5. Once it’s unlocked, you can do them at any time by speaking to the Mission Receptionist at the east side of the Shinsengumi Barracks. When you speak to him, you’ll get a menu with lots of different options. Some of these are for Trooper Cards which you can read more about here, but the one you want to choose is “Dispatch”.
This will take you to the Dispatch menu where you’ll only have one place to go to at the start which is the Bandit’s Cave. There are three locations altogether, and the next category will unlock when you complete all the missions in the previous category. Bandit’s Cave has 10 missions, the second location, Bandit’s Mine also has 10 missions while the final category has 20 missions.

Battle Dungeon Missions¶
Once you’ve chosen your location, you’ll be met with a menu that displays the available missions. At first, you’ll only have a couple to pick from, but after you complete a mission, another one will unlock. The missions will have various difficulties indicated by the stars on the right, and you’ll unlock more difficult missions when you finish the previous one. Although they do have objectives, most of them will require you to get to the end of the dungeon and defeat the mini-boss that resides within.
When the mission has been completed, you will receive the Battle Results screen, which will give you a rank on all the battles inside the dungeon. You will then receive the Mission Details screen, which will show you what you’ve picked up and your reward for completing the mission. Battle Dungeon Objectives¶
There are only a couple of objectives in the dungeons, and even then they still require you to reach the end of the dungeon to finish the mission. You have the “Find the Stolen ryo” objectives which require you to find three stashes which are hidden in one of the many side rooms. Then you’ll have the “Defeat the random enemy” objective which is basically getting to the end of the dungeon.

Battle Dungeon Rewards¶
The Rewards for Battle Dungeons can be quite lucrative as you’ll get a nice sum of ryo for completing the mission, and that’s not including all the rare materials you can find scattered around the dungeon in boxes and pots. You can find out beforehand what materials can be found in the dungeon by pressing / on the mission select screen. Then the enemies themselves seem to drop some higher-tier crafting materials too. If that wasn’t enough, you have a chance to get the mini-bosses Trooper Cards, so there is more than one reason to do them.
