Like a Dragon: Ishin

Substory 47 - Ee Ja Nai Ka

By
Jarrod Garripoli

Substories are the wackier stories in the Like A Dragon series, to offshoot the more serious tone of the main story. You will first unlock the ability to do Substories in Chapter 2, although they aren’t shown on your map, so you will need to fully explore each map to find them. This page will give a walkthrough of the Ee Ja Nai Ka Substory, found in Fushimi.

Where to Start Ee Ja Nai Ka in Like a Dragon: Ishin

(1 of 2) Go to this spot in Fushimi to start this Substory

Whenever you reach Chapter 2 of the main story, you will rescue a Shinto Priest as part of the main story, who will introduce you to the Virtue mechanic. After doing that, you will be able to explore Fushimi, the first main area of the game. Head on over to North Yashikimachi, which is in the northwestern section of the town, right by the dojo you fought at during the introductory portions of the chapter. To be more precise, you want to go right in front of the entrance to Ebisu Pawn Fushimi. You’ll know you’re in the correct place, when you see a crowd of people doing a dance.

How to Complete Ee Ja Nai Ka in Like a Dragon: Ishin

You will be introduced to the Ee ja nai ka here, which was a form of political/social protests done during the end of the Edo period of Japanese history. The phrase they sing translates as something like “Why not?”, like “Why not improve things?” However, some people used this as a means to do bad things, like is shown in the game. Some thugs are harassing an employee, disguising their cruel methods under the banner of the protest above.

(1 of 3) Some people ruin a good thing by doing bad things

Of course, Ryoma decides that enough is enough, and tries to put a stop to them (although he is swept up in the dance for a brief moment). This lead to a fight with the two men, one of which will be wielding a katana and the other using his bare fists. Neither of the two are particularly challenging to fight, although they do seem to have quite a bit more health than the normal enemies you can fight around Fushimi. It doesn’t really matter what you do, or use, here, so just focus on one opponent until they go down, then turn your attention to the other. As thanks for helping him, the employee will hand over an Exquisite Cogwheel, putting an end to this Substory.
