Substories are the wackier stories in the Like A Dragon series, to offshoot the more serious tone of the main story. You will first unlock the ability to do Substories in Chapter 2, although they aren’t shown on your map, so you will need to fully explore each map to find them. This page will give a walkthrough of The Barking Dog Substory, found in Rakunai.
Where to Start The Barking Dog in Like a Dragon: Ishin¶
You will not be able to start this Substory until you reach Chapter 4 of the main story. To be specific, you will need to wait until you gain access to the Another Life section, which is when you get your second home. Once you reach that point, head on over to the eastern end of Rakunai and look for the pawnbroker there. Head south, down the street right next to the pawnbroker, and you should run into the barking dog. Approach it to start the Substory.
Where to Find Bones in Like a Dragon: Ishin¶
The dog will continually bark at you, keeping it up until one of the nearby residents comes to tell you about the dog. It turns out that the people living there are getting tired of the constant barking, so they are thinking of getting rid of the dog. Ryoma suggests to himself that maybe if the dog had something to chew on, like a bone, it might stop barking. Thankfully, you won’t need to have to go far to get a Bone, if you haven’t already found one, since it is findable in the pots. However, this is purely RNG and it might be challenging to actually find one in a pot.
Instead of waiting for that to happen, head to the nearby pawnbroker and choose the option to see his wares. One of the items for sale is a Bone, which costs 1,000 Mon. Purchase the Bone and bring it back to the dog to finish the Substory.

How to Max the Bond for The Barking Dog in Like a Dragon: Ishin¶
After you initially give the dog a Bone, you will establish a bond with it. To increase this Bond, you simply need to go to the dog and give it more Bones. Just purchase the Bones from the pawnbroker to give it the dog, then go far enough away (like the Shrine in the northwest; might need to enter a building, so the Ginryu Dojo would be good) and come back to do it again. Eventually, at around 60-70% bond, there will be a scene with some people there, who say they are ready to get rid of the dog. Instead of this happening, Ryoma says he will bring the dog to his second home instead, maxing the bond.
