Like a Dragon: Ishin

Substory 50 - The Desperate Fisherman

By
Jarrod Garripoli

Substories are the wackier stories in the Like A Dragon series, to offshoot the more serious tone of the main story. You will first unlock the ability to do Substories in Chapter 2, although they aren’t shown on your map, so you will need to fully explore each map to find them. This page will give a walkthrough of The Desperate Fisherman Substory, found in Fushimi.

Where to Start The Desperate Fisherman in Like A Dragon: Ishin

(1 of 2) Go here in Fushimi to find a fisherman who has no luck

Go here in Fushimi to find a fisherman who has no luck (left), Approach the fisherman to begin the Substory (right)

Upon reaching Chapter 2 of the main story and rescuing the Shinto Priest, you will be able to freely explore the Fushimi area. Just south of the Teradaya inn, you will see some docks, where there will be two spots that give you the opportunity to fish. In between those two spots, you should see a man standing there. Approach that man for a short scene of him expressing some trouble, then speak with him after the matter to start this Substory.

How to Complete The Desperate Fisherman in Like a Dragon: Ishin

The man is a fisherman and is having trouble actually catching some fish, with his wife giving him an ultimatum that he needs to catch one or quit fishing altogether. He asks you for a favor, which is to give him a fish. Any fish will do and you have one of two options on how to obtain it. The first is to go to the Uorin Fish Market on Fushimi Ichibangai, and purchase any of the fish there. This is a simple process and shouldn’t really take much money, as you can purchase the cheapest one.

The other method is to actually go fishing to catch one yourself, with there being two spots. The eastern spot is river fishing, while the western one is sea fishing, which is further divided into two different locales. It doesn’t matter where you go, since you only need a single fish, although it wouldn’t hurt to try and get a couple here, if you wanted to help fill the bond with the fisherman. The river fishing spot might be slightly easier, since you don’t have to do any extra travelling, but either spot is fine.

(1 of 4) Cast your line near a fish’s shadow in the water

Once you have arrived at a fishing spot, choose to start fishing and you will receive a brief tutorial. Fishing is very simple in Like a Dragon: Ishin, as you don’t need to manually reel in the fish and it’s literally timing a button press. Before casting your line, look for the shadows of fish in the water. Locate their heads and put your cursor near it, then cast the line. If done right, the fish should turn red and go after your bobber. Whenever the fish snags the line, you need to wait until the red portion of the bobber goes underwater, which is your cue to reel in the line.

If all goes well, then you will have caught yourself a fish. As mentioned above, you only need one, but it doesn’t hurt to catch a few more, as you will need to give him a few more to increase his bond. On a related topic, the starting rod isn’t all too good, as it limits your reach at the fishing spots. To get better rods, you will have to use Virtue at the main shrines to get better options, which will extend your reach, while also making it a little easier to snag fish. Once you have a fish, hand it over to the fisherman to finish the Substory.
