Substory 17 - The Lucky Cat

Substories are the wackier stories in the Like A Dragon series, to offshoot the more serious tone of the main story. You will first unlock the ability to do Substories in Chapter 2, although they aren’t shown on your map, so you will need to fully explore each map to find them. This page will give a walkthrough of The Lucky Cat Substory, found in Rakunai.

Where to Start The Lucky Cat in Like a Dragon: Ishin

Upon reaching Chapter 4, you will eventually gain a second home, which is part of the Another Life section of the game. Once you’re that far, head to Rakunai and go towards the shrine in the northwestern corner. At the corner of the street leading to the shrine, just before turning west, you should see a man and a cat. Approach them to begin this Substory.

How to Complete The Lucky Cat in Like a Dragon: Ishin

As you investigate what’s going on, you will see the man give the cat 1,000 Mon. He mentions that the cat is the great lucky cat, who bestows lucky blessings on anyone who leaves it an offering. After the man runs off with his blessing, you can interact with the cat to give it some money. For this instance, you will it 1,000 Mon and the cat runs off, returning with a Whitebait. The cat seems to want the Whitebait, so Ryoma gives the fist to it, which will bring the Substory to a close.

Giving money to the cat will have it bring back some items for you

How to Max the Bond with The Lucky Cat in Like a Dragon: Ishin

When you finish the above Substory, you will gain a bond gauge with the Lucky Cat, meaning you will be able to interact with it some more. In between each interaction, you will need to enter a building, so head on over to something like the Nichibuza, as an example. Return to the cat and you will need to give it some money, causing it to run off and return with something, usually an item. The following table will give all of the items you get from giving money to the cat.

Upon returning after the 5,000 Mon option, Ryoma will decide to give the cat 1 Ryo. This will lead to you following the cat, where you overhear two crooks talking about some kind of nefarious plot. You will end up fighting both of them, who are complete pushovers, and your reward will be 5 Ryo. The lucky cat will also warm up to you, so you end up taking it to your second home (and get to select a name for it). The bond gauge will now max out at this point, so you’re done with this cat.
