Combat is inevitable in Assassin’s Creed Rogue and like the previous games in the series, for the most part; it is a patient game of countering incoming attacks and performing one of several counter-manoeuvres to deal with enemies.
Counters
When you engage in battle with enemies, as they perform an attack, you will see a red icon flasy above their heads. Pressing the counter button at this particular moment will allow you to perform a counter attack. These can include:
- Attack – use the sword to kill the enemy.
- Ranged – use a ranged attack to kill an a enemy.
- Disarm/stun the enemy.
- Grapple and throw the enemy.
When you see the red icon (left) a counter move is possible. Highlight another enemy whilst an executiona animation is happening (right) to start a kill streak.
Kill Streaks
Kill streaks enable Shay to kill multiple enemies in a row using quick fire instant kill attacks. To trigger a kill chain, you need to counter-kill an enemy and during the finishing move animation, quickly highlight a subsequent enemy in close proximity and hit the attack button to immediately execute him upon completion of your first finisher. You can do this as many times as you like, but keep in mind certain enemies, such as captains and brutes are immune to kill chain attacks.
