Part 1: Naval Combat

You’ll be piloting a new ship for this mission and it is quite a bit more powerful than the Morrigan. It is equipped with more advanced versions of the mortars, broadside cannons, explosive shot and Puckle guns on our own ship and can take a lot more damage before going down. Note that for the duration of the mission, there is an optional objective to destroy 10 or more ships with mortars, so keep an eye out for opportunities!

Follow your allies into the smoke (left). Use your mortars from a distance to damage ships as you approach (right).

To begin with, things are quite quiet, so follow your allies until you see enemy ships appear on the horizon and move in to attack. This is just a line of attackers here with a man o’ war at the centre, a pair of frigates and 5-6 gunships peppered between the larger ships. Use your mortars to damage the larger ships as much as possible from a distance (and try to get a few gunships as collateral if possible). When things get close, turn side on and switch to your broadside/heavy shoot. If you have a chance to line up 2-3 of ships at once, broadsiding them is also a viable option. Either way, once the man o’ war goes down, the rest of the bad guys should not put up too much of a challenge.

Once all of the initial attackers have been sunk, a scene will play.

Part 2: Naval Defence

The beginning of this section is all about the fireships. Fireships are the kamizaze pilots of the sea. They are small, gunboat sized ships that are on fire and packed with explosives that are being piloted directly at you. They will cause a good deal of damage if they hit you, so it is a good idea to sink them using your mortars and front-facing explosive shot before they get too close. It should also be noted that the second optional objective for this mission is to take no damage from the fireships.

Keep an eye out behind you as gunships are fast and will sneak up on you (left). Be sure to focus on the fireships as a priority when they appear (right).

To begin with the fireships will come in waves as such:

  • First up will be a pair of fireships with one coming from front and another from the right.
  • The second wave will see mortars start dropping and 4 fireships. Note that the ships to the far left will reach your ship sooner so focus on taking them down in order from left to right.
  • As with above, the mortars will continue to drop around you, and an additional 4 fireships will appear. This time, the ships on the right are closest, so focus on sinking them in order from right to left.

Part 3: Naval Combat

Following the first three waves, you’ll spot another fleet on the horizon consisting of a Man o’ War, two Frigates and you guessed it – more fireships! Four fireships will lead the way whilst the other, heavier ships will attack from a distance.

Use your mortars to take out fireships two at a time (left). Continue to focus on the fireships as a priority 9right) until they disappear.

Again, the obvious necessity here is to take out the fireships using your mortars and explosive shot before they get too close before turning your attention to the bigger ships. The same tactics as above apply – use your mortars to damage the heavy ships until you get too close at which point you need to switch to your broadside and explosive shot to outmanoeuvre and damage them as best you can.
