Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

How to Defeat Zhang Rang in Wo Long

By
Shane Williams

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty launches Friday 3rd, March 2023. As you may already know if you played any of Team Ninja’s previous games, such as Nioh & Nioh 2, the bosses are no joke and Wo Long doesn’t shy away from that as a lot of the bosses you come across will require some kind of strategy and practice before you can slay them. This page will navigate you through the necessary steps of the Chapter 3 Boss, Zhang Rang.

You’ll face Zhang Rang in the Main Mission Fall of The Corrupted Eunuch

Best Way To Defeat Zhang Rang in Wo Long

You’ll face Zhang Rang at the end of the main mission Fall of The Corrupted Eunuch which takes place in Chapter 3 and he is Morale Rank 20. Before going into the fight you’ll want to make sure you get all of the Battle / Marking Flags to increase your Fortitude Rank to 20, so if you die your Morale Rank cant go any lower than 20. You’ll then want to farm the enemies by going back and forth between the two flags until your Morale Rank is at least 21-22, but if you want to go higher, then it’ll just make the battle slightly easier.

Defeat The Duplicates

Zhang Rang is one of the more simpler boss fights that you’ll come across throughout your Wo Long playthrough, but it’s an opponent that can easily take you down if you aren’t aware of some of his mechanics. The main gimmick of the Zhang Rang fight is that he can duplicate himself which will cause you to be attacked with devastating Critical Blow from all directions. You’ll be able to identify the real Zhang Rang to the clones, as he won’t have a smaller health bar above his head. Defeating each clone will make Zhang’s Spirit Gauge smaller, so stunning him will be a lot easier going forward.

(1 of 2) Take out all the Clones

Take out all the Clones (left), then increase Zhang’s Spirit Gauge to perform a Fatal Strike (right)

Additionally, each Clone will buff so leaving them will make him a lot more stronger, so, when they spawn you’ll want to shift your attention onto them. They don’t have a lot of health, so you can easily take them down with a simple combo. However, successfully deflecting them will allow you to perform a Fatal Strike to one shot them. Additionally, throughout the fight Zhang will summon the duplicates again. If you’ve got an NPC Companion with you, then you’ll want to tackle the clones with them otherwise they’ll get overwhelmed and die, meaning you need to keep reviving them.

Perform Critical Blows

Once you’ve defeated all the clones and its just you and the real Zhang Rang you’ll want to work on quickly performing a Critical Blow, so you’ll need to rush him and get as many attacks in as possible before he teleports. You can do this by doing the Combo DualSense-ButtonSquare + DualSense-ButtonSquare + DualSense-ButtonTriangle on Playstation or Xbox-ButtonX + Xbox-ButtonX + Xbox-ButtonY on Xbox whilst throwing in the odd Martial Art/Spell to fill up his Spirit Gauge. Additionally, you can use Repression Crush on the boss to slow down recovery time of the Spirit Gauge. So, combining both Repression Crush and the shortened bar, stunning him should be a lot easier. After you’ve pulled off a Critical Blow he’ll resummon the Clones, so you’ll need to repeat the above process again until he has been defeated.
