The Amon Clan has been a part of the Like a Dragon series for a good while, with them being the superbosses in most games. They have returned in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, only they’ve appeared with a whole pirate crew this time. They are the toughest opponents in the game and require you to do all of the battles in Pirates’ Coliseum before they become available. This page will go over all you need to do to prepare for the battles with the Amon Pirates, as well as strategies for each of the fights.
The Amon Pirates are the strongest fight in the entire game, so come prepared.
Unlocking the Amon Pirates¶
First and foremost, you’ll need to unlock the Amon Pirates, which is done through the Pirates’ Coliseum. You will have to complete every single battle in the Pirates’ Coliseum to gain access to them, with most of them just unlocking as you increase your Pirate Rank done through Reputation. However, there are a few not unlocked that way, so you may be wondering how to do those battles. There is one battle under the Tournament of Captains tab that is story-related and will unlock when it does, so don’t worry about it.
As for the final tab in the coliseum, the Swashbuckler Showdown, they are all related to the Devil Flags storyline. Each battle here corresponds to one of the leaders for the Devil Flags, so you will need to complete the entire thing before all four will become available. Once you do complete them, as well as the rest of the battles, you will receive the treasure chest behind the coliseum NPC. There will also be a cutscene that occurs, with Majima saying they are the strongest pirates, but you then learn about the Amon Pirates, unlocking the first of three battles with them.
Preparing for the Amon Pirates¶
Before you actually participate in the battle with the Amon Pirates, you want to make sure you’re prepared. There are three battles with them, one a ship battle, followed immediately by a crew battle, and then a third, separate fight where it’s one-on-one. So, you have two in a row, then a third that is completely separate. The first two are your standard fare ship and crew battles, but dialed up to 11, because it’s the Amon Pirates. You will want to make sure you have your ship fully upgraded here, as well as a good crew manning the weapons. Remember that having S-rank for everything is ideal, and you probably want someone that adds more repairs as your First Mate (Nishida is great here).
(1 of 3) Before doing the battles, make sure your ship is fully upgraded.
Ideally, for your Boarding Squads, you want the best characters that can reach level 40 on there, as well as those story characters that are better at fighting in Crew Battles and at level 50. Make sure to check out the Best Crew Members page for more information on all of the above. The Squad Leaders should provide some great buffs to the rest of the Boarding Squads, but equally important are the ones in the Support Squad. Noah, Okasana-chan, and Goro are the best here (Nancy-chan can replace Goro, if you have DLC).
Once you complete the ship/crew battles, you can prepare for the third bout with Amon. Unlike the previous fights, you will be able to use items in the third fight, so make sure you’re fully stocked with the best healing items (Toughness, Tauriner and Staminan items), including the ones in parentheses, as well as some of the better meals you can cook yourself. You will also want your health and attack maxed out here, just to be on the safe side, and the majority of other upgrades. Basically, max out Majima’s upgrades, as well as bring along plenty of healing items. Items that restore your Heat Gauge are also welcomed, since you can deal a lot of damage with some of the Heat Actions.
Amon Pirates Ship Battle¶
The ship battle with the Amon Pirates doesn’t play around, despite there only being a single vessel. They have 10,000 HP and their attacks are brutal, although it isn’t anything you haven’t seen before. It’s just that their attacks are more plentiful than most of the other ships you’ve fought thus far. As soon as the battle begins, move towards their ship and save your boost, as their first attack will almost always be the homing missiles. In addition to this, you will see them using the barrel mines often, especially if you get close, as well as the other explosive mines.
(1 of 5) The Amon Pirates will almost always start by shooting off some homing missiles.
In fact, those explosive mines (not the barrel ones) are extremely dangerous and can deplete your ship’s health bar very quickly. Their cannons are either flamethrowers (starboard side) or the laser cannons (port side), both of which can be dangerous. The former can inflict the burn status on your ship, so you’ll need to quickly take care of it before it does too much damage. Both the flamethrowers and laser cannons can build up big damage over time, so you don’t want to stay too close to the enemy ship when they use those.
Since you don’t have to contend with any other ships, your full concentration is on the main vessel. This allows you to try and keep track of all their attacks, which you should worry about as much as possible. It’s probably a good idea to keep your ship’s health above 50% at all times, just because the exploding shots can make your health disappear, as can the flamethrowers. Use your boosts to escape the homing shots, as well as get enough speed to drift away from the exploding drop shots. Likewise, you want to stay away from the barrel mines, if you can, since they cover a wide area.
Amon Pirates Crew Battle¶
Once you bring the ship’s HP down to zero, you can board the ship and begin the second fight. This one is a little easier on you, but you still need to be careful. You’re up against 50 enemies on the ship, while you will only have 21, so it’s definitely an uphill battle. For the most part, you should probably ignore the non-leaders here, as you want to make sure they don’t get a special attack off on you. This special attack summons clouds that shoot lightning, and they can quickly down your allies. If you defeat all of the leaders, though, then they won’t be able to use their special. Note that there is another special attack you might see first, where all members will toss a flaming boomerang.
(1 of 4) The Amon Pirates’ crew will number 50, so you’ll be in for a tough fight.
Outside of that knowledge, you want to make sure you always use yours as soon as it’s up, since you should be using Noah and he’ll heal your crew. The other two support characters should also reduce the damage everyone takes, while increasing their attack (assuming you have those set). Of course, you might not have the chance to get rid of the leaders, so if you fear that might not be possible, try to thin the enemy’s numbers as quickly as possible. Even if you are the last person standing on your team, you can still use the Support skill to refill your health.
Taiyo Amon Boss Battle¶
After defeating the Amon Pirates, it looks like things are over, but it’s not quite yet. While speaking with the receptionist, Taiyo comes out and congratulates you, but offers one final challenge, a one-on-one battle. Remember that you have time to prepare for this, since you select this battle from the coliseum’s menu. As already said, this will be a one-on-one battle, and Amon is definitely no pushover. You want to avoid being too aggressive here, as he pretty much as the same tools as you, including the Chain Hook.
(1 of 3) Taiyo Amon will have a lot of similar moves like you, which includes the Chain Hook.
If he manages to use the Chain Hook on you, you’ll be stunned for a few seconds, but that is more than enough time for him to unleash a combo. Taiyo will have plenty of moves that can break your guard, so be careful about that (the white aura ones). For the most part, the first part of the battle isn’t too bad, as long as you try to avoid his attacks and counter when he’s open. Once you shave off a few health bars, though, things will pick up and the battle becomes a lot more challenging. The first thing Amon will do is summon a bunch of clones, some of which will use melee weapons and others that use ranged weapons.
The other thing Amon will start doing at this point is summon a bunch of swords that hang in the air for a few seconds, before they quickly descend down on you. This attack sucks and if you get hit by one, you’re likely going to keep getting hit by them. Thankfully, you can actually block this move, so anytime you see the swords come out, block to avoid taking damage. The problem, though, is that the clones might be able to break your block, so you should concentrate on them first. Luckily, all of the clones only have a single health bar, so they shouldn’t last entirely too long.
(1 of 5) At some point, Amon will summon a bunch of clones, which is when the real battle begins.
One good thing to use here is the Heat Action you can do when you throw your cutlasses, then perform the Heat Action when they come right back to you. This should hit three enemies for some decent damage, although there are probably better ones to use. Once you defeat all of the clones, then things should calm down, although Amon will still use the shadow sword attack, so be ready to block when they appear. Amon will also have a rocket launcher during this second phase, which is quite hard to dodge.
Upon finally bringing Amon’s health down to zero, you will finally be done with the Amon Pirates. Not only will you unlock the Legend of the Coliseum trophy/achievement, but the receptionist will give you the Champion’s Ring, a powerful ring that constantly increases your Heat while in combat.
