The Like a Dragon series is filled with a lot of minigames, some of which are added for the first time, and others that have been featured in plenty of the titles. One of the recurring minigames is Shogi, which was first added in the original Yakuza 2 on Playstation 2. While it featured mostly the basic Shogi game, they later added Puzzle Shogi, starting with Judgment. You will be presented with a series of boards that have preplaced pieces on it, and you have to get a checkmate within a certain number of moves.

Puzzle Shogi Location¶
You won’t be able to play Shogi until you progress the main story a little bit. In Chapter 2, you will eventually visit Honolulu, which is where you will the Shogi minigame. As part of the main story, you will visit the shrine and be introduced to Kamulop. Sitting behind the shrine will be an older man that allows you to play Shogi. As with most other games, you are able to play Ranked, Challenges, and Puzzle Shogi. The only one this page will worry about is the last one, as some of the puzzles can be a bit tricky. It’s also a great way to get the necessary points to purchase the goodies from the Shogi NPC.
Puzzle Shogi 1 Solution¶
You only have a single move to put the enemy into checkmate. The opponent’s King is in the upper right corner of the board, with a Lance behind it and two Pawns in front of it. You have a Silver General to the left of the King, as well as a Gold General to the left of that piece. All you have to do here is move the Silver General forward one place, making sure to not promote it, to win with a Checkmate.
Puzzle Shogi 2 Solution¶
You only have a single move to put the enemy into checkmate. The opponent’s King is located on the topmost row, in the center, with two Gold Generals on either side. They also have a Pawn sitting two spaces in front of the left unit, with your own Gold General to the right of the Pawn. Additionally, you have a Knight in the captured space in the lower right. This allows you to place that piece any spot on the board, which is what you will be doing. Put it to the right of your own Gold General for the Checkmate.
Puzzle Shogi 3 Solution¶
You only have a single move to put the enemy into checkmate. The enemy King is towards the upper right corner, with a Pawn in front of it and a Lance behind it. You have your own Pawn next to the opponent’s, as well as a Rook to the left of your Pawn. This one is pretty simple, as you just need to move your Rook forward one space and promote it for the Checkmate.
Puzzle Shogi 4 Solution¶
You only have a single move to put the enemy into checkmate. The enemy’s King is located toward the upper right corner of the board, with a Silver General being behind it. They also have a Gold General next to the silver one and for some reason, there’s a Pawn towards the center of the board. As for your pieces, you have a Silver General located just diagonally from their gold one, and you’ll see a Gold General in the captured area. To win here, place the Gold General just diagonally below the King for Checkmate.
Puzzle Shogi 5 Solution¶
You only have a single move to put the enemy into checkmate. When you first look at the board, you’ll see the opponent’s King towards the upper right corner, with a Pawn to the right of it. Behind the Pawn is a Lance and you’ll also have a Knight diagonally down from the King. Your pieces include a Pawn two spaces in front of their Pawn, as well as a Silver General next to their King and a promoted Rook next to the general. All you need to do to win is move the Rook right above the Silver General, which will be Checkmate.
Puzzle Shogi 6 Solution¶
You will have two moves to put the enemy into checkmate from Level 6 onwards. On the board, the opponent’s King is near the upper right corner, with a Lance behind it and a Pawn two spaces in front of it. You will have a Bishop right next to the King, as well as a Pawn next to their Pawn. Additionally, there is a Gold General in the captured area. For your first move, grab the Pawn and put it one space forward, then promote it. This will cause the King to move into the back row, where you can now place the Gold General to the left of it for Checkmate. Note you can also put the Gold General to the left of your Bishop for the same result.
(1 of 4) The first move for Level 6 will have you putting your Pawn here and promoting it.
Puzzle Shogi 7 Solution¶
You will have two moves to put the enemy into checkmate. The opponent has their King, Silver General, and Gold General all next to each other towards the top right corner of the board. As for you, there’s a Silver General in the captured pile, and you have two Knights, a Rook and a Bishop on the board. For your first move, take the captured Silver General and place it behind the opponent’s Gold General. This will cause the opponent to take it with the same Gold General. Once they do that, you can now move your Knight towards the bottom right and place it in front of the King, making sure to promote it for Checkmate.
Puzzle Shogi 8 Solution¶
You will have two moves to put the enemy into checkmate. The opponent’s pieces are all towards the upper right corner of the board, with the King being flanked by a Bishop and Gold General. Being the Gold General is a Knight, and in front of the Bishop is a Silver General. Your pieces on the board include a promoted Rook just diagonal of the enemy’s Bishop, in their last row, as well as a Silver General two spaces in front of their Gold General.
You also have two captured pieces, which include a Silver General and a Gold General. For your first move, take the captured Gold General and place it behind the King, which will cause the Bishop to take it. With this, you can now take the captured Silver General and place it to the left of the Bishop for Checkmate.
Puzzle Shogi 9 Solution¶
You will have two moves to put the enemy into checkmate. Your opponent has their King next to the upper right corner of the board, with a Pawn in front of it. Two spaces to the left of the Pawn is a Silver General and a little further left, right next to the center, is a Bishop. The only piece you have on the board is a promoted Rook on the upper row. You also have a Gold General and a Bishop in the captured area that you can use.
The first move you should do is place the Bishop in front of the enemy’s Silver General, which will put them into Check. The Silver General will then take your Bishop, so pick up the Gold General and put it to the left of the King for Checkmate.
(1 of 6) In Level 8, take the captured Gold General and put it behind the King for the first move.
Puzzle Shogi 10 Solution¶
You will have two moves to put the enemy into checkmate. Your opponent’s King is in the far right column on the board, close to the middle row. They also have a Rook diagonally behind it, and a Silver General diagonally in front of it. All of your pieces are already on the board, so you have nothing in the captured space. You have a Bishop on either side of the Silver General, as well as a Lance behind one of the Bishops and a Silver General to the left of their Rook.
The first move will have you taking the Bishop on the left and moving it behind the King, then promoting it. This will cause the King to capture that Bishop, so you can then move the other Bishop in front of the Rook for Checkmate.
