Grounded

What are Playgrounds in Grounded?

By
Paul McNally

Grounded is a game that has captivated a lot of players for well over a year now. Its unique setting and fiendish level design have seen it constantly be a go-to game for gamers in down periods between other game releases.

The devs have played a big part in this since its initial Early Access release as well and this latest update in November 2023 introduces what could give Grounded a longevity that many games might kill for.

Playgrounds is the new Game Mode that we are talking about, and it takes the idea of Grounded and turns it into a huge sandbox of creativity. A sandbox where you can create your own mini areas of the game and share them with your friends and the wider internet, who can then download your Playground and play it for themselves.

Starting out you can start your creation on a simple patch of flat land, or choose to go all out in the full backyard that we all know and love.

At your fingertips, you will have access to pretty much everything in the normal game, including all of its creatures. You will be able to construct buildings, arenas, and even cities should you have the inclination to. And then, when you are particularly proud of something you can share it with other players.

We have already seen Gladiator-style arenas where you can take on the "Broodmother" iconBroodmother or Director Schmector either alone or with your party.

This downloaded Playground lets you have staged fights with the game’s bosses.

You can create your own machines, and puzzles and pretty much mold the landscape to your choosing. Think Minecraft with Grounded and it looks as though, even if it is in its early stages of life, that Playgrounds could offer something that will really catch players imaginations.

Once you have set up your Playground’s criteria you can choose any of the four main characters to play with and then you are into the sandbox where the press of a button will bring up access to everything in the game for you to place it where you wish. Pop it down and have a play with it, fight it, or continue building on top of it. The limit here will be your imagination and the following pages here will give you some indication of what is possible going forward.
