Although we went through one earlier, this mission is the first real taste of the base defence mode. As with the original mission, the game will have you protecting a vat at the centre of the Brewery from attack for a period of 3 minutes against a massive number of OD. Where it is different is that this time, rather than playing through someone else’s set up, you will be able to plant traps for the base defence yourself.

After the introduction, the game will give you a brief tutorial on how traps work, where you can plat them and how to choose between traps. As such, go and plant a Spinning Blade trap and a Fling Board trap out the front. In this location, there are two main entrances, both located on the eastern side of the Brewery. Note that there are barricades in the same locations as last time, so place your spinning blade traps in front of these to help thin the crowd and slow down the advance. When you have placed your traps, head up to the valve and turn it to begin.

Set traps around the base (left) and then turn the valve when you are ready to go (right).

The first wave of enemies during this defence will usually be made up of majority regular OD, with several Blowers and the occasional Popper, and with the latter you’ll want to destroy them as quickly as possible to mitigate damage they can cause to barricades and traps. Focus on keeping the enemies away from the barricades as much as possible, whilst maintaining movement to minimise damage to yourself.

After about a minute, the enemies will be wiped out and you’ll have a few moments to prepare for a second wave. During this time, your energy amount will increase, allowing you to place a couple more traps. As the enemies will have likely broken through the first barricades by now, use the traps to reinforce the areas surrounding the vat.

The second wave will introduce a new enemy type – the OD Gunker – these guys are ice-based enemies that are much more durable than the regular OD enemies and can shoot projectiles onto interactable objects such as wires and bounceables which will damage you and interrupt your combo if touched. As with the Blowers, you’ll be able to see where they are shooting thanks to a red circle appearing on the ground.

Get to high vantage points (left) to identify areas at threat and defend those barricades (right).

In addition to the Gunkers, you’ll have a veritable horde of regular OD to contend with and then, just when you thought it was under control, with around 30 seconds to go, a Herker will show up and a number of Poppers and Blowers will appear to boot. Focus on keeping the enemies away from the vats, whilst trying to take the Herker down.

Once the three minutes are up, the vat will wipe out any remaining OD in the area. At this point, return to Floyd and interact with the panel next to him to complete the level.
