How to Build Defensive Walls in Sons of the Forest

By
Scott Peers

There are a number of ways to defend your base in Sons of the Forest, but one of the most simple and effective methods is to erect a defensive wall around it. You can do this in whatever size or direction you want, but the main thing to remember here is to cut spikes at the top of your logs. This not only provides a more stark visual contrast to regular walls, but it can also damage some enemies that might try to jump the walls.

How to Build Defensive Walls in Sons of the Forest

In general, you should only need to create your first defensive walls at the height of a regular whole log. This will allow you to become familiar with the process of erecting defensive walls, but it also happens to be pretty much all you need to defend your base against most of the enemies currently in the game.

How to Create Spikes in a Defensive Wall

To begin building a wall, take one whole log and place it vertically on the ground. You can do this when you see the white circle appear on the patch of land that you’re looking down at. If the white outline of a whole log appears horizontally, you need to right click MouseRightButton to alternate between placement methods. You can already chip away at the top of a single vertical log to create a sharp point if you wish, just to test how it’s done. Just look up at the tip of the log and move the camera until you see the outline of a red line. This red line indicates where you’ll be cutting, and you’ll have a chance to aim the axe before making the cut, so you can abandon the action if you wish.

How to Extend a Defensive Wall

The principle for extending the wall requires a couple of things. First, you’ll need to make sure that the ground you’re extending it to is fairly flat, since the white outline of a circle won’t always appear if you’re looking down at a patch of uneven land. Second, in order to place a new log freely next to the previous log placed, you need to avoid snapping it into the default position, which is one log length’s worth of space between the first. Just keep moving the camera around the bottom of the first log until you see the white circle, but if you see a white line leading to a circle further away, this will place the log too far.

You need to make sure that you place each vertical log directly next to the previous one. In this way you can create bends in the wall structure to ensure that you can keep building it around natural barriers such as boulders or rock outcrops. Once you’ve got the entire wall built, remember to cut parts out of one section to craft a door out of it. You can do this by splitting a log and placing multiple split parts until it fills the gap. The door will then automatically form in the gap, and you can walk through it easily.

As mentioned previously, the main purpose of spiking the tips of the vertical logs is to potentially damage any enemies that try to jump into your base from above. The chances of this happening aren’t too great, though, and instead you’ll most likely find that enemies will attempt to knock your wall down first, before trying to jump into the base from above. Either way, at least having a spiked log looks more imposing!
