Sons of the Forest

Sons of the Forest: Best Armor Ranked

By
Craig Robinson

The Sons of the Forest has lots of different armors, all of which come with their own damage mitigation modifiers, craft costs, and looks. Trying to figure out which is the best Sons of the Forest armor type can be tricky. However, we have run some tests, and we now know what works best in what situations. Here is a look at the Sons of the Forest’s best armors to use in your save.

Sons of the Forest Best Armors Ranked

To summarize our lists, here is the best armor to get your hands on in Sons of the Forest. However, do not be fooled by some of these armors, as they do have some niches. Below is the ranking we give the best armors in Sons of the Forest. Further down, based on visual in-game observations, you’ll get a brief snippet of how defensive they are so you have an idea of how storing these armors are, along with when you’re going to use them or why:

  1. "Tech Armor" iconTech Armor
  2. "Creepy Armor" iconCreepy Armor
  3. "Gold Armor" iconGold Armor
  4. "Bone Armor" iconBone Armor
  5. "Deer Hide Armor" iconDeer Hide Armor
  6. "Leaf Armor" iconLeaf Armor

Leaf Armor

While leaf armor provides little defensive stats, it does put the player into stealth, as seen via the eye icon on the minimap, and the darkened corners of the screen. See image annotations for reference.

  • Heavy Attack: Removes two armor pieces
  • Light Attack: Removes one armor piece

Leaf Armor is very much the worst defensive armor type in the game. However, it’s better than exposed skin. When you get lots of cloth, which you will do if you repeatedly visit abandoned camps, caves, and bunkers, you can reliably craft Leaf Armor. This is decent, as it will at least protect you from a few attacks.

However, its special niche is that it Improves stealth greatly. Be warned, you can still be detected up close by cannibals and other creatures with vision, or if you make lots of sound by the eyeless mutants like the "Fingers" iconFingers or "Faceless" iconFaceless. But, it is still very good for avoiding unnecessary combat or preserving supplies you can’t afford to lose.

Hide Armor

  • Heavy attacks reduce 1 armor
  • Light attacks reduce 1 armor

This is okay armor for being above ground, but nothing fantastic. However, it is very reliant on being a good hunter to maintain a steady supply of this armor type. Chances are you will likely make this on a whim, as the hunting game is difficult, especially while you have weak arrows, low strength value, etc. However, it becomes much easier to gather when you get "Carbon Fiber Arrow" iconCarbon Fiber Arrows, "Crossbow" iconCrossbow + "Crossbow Bolts" iconCrossbow Bolts. But, you’ll likely already be on your way to a full set of Creepy Armor or "Bone" iconBone Armor by then. Therefore, it is largely the most useless armor in the game (at the time of writing).

Creepy Armor

The Creepy Armor is the best mid-game armor in Sons of the Forest for defense.

  • Can take around 3-4 hits before breaking from light attacks
  • Heavier attacks can still bust an armor stack in 1-2 hits, depending on the creature doing it.

Creepy Armor is one of the best armors in Sons of the Forest, largely thanks to its defensive strengths and acquisition. Players can get lots of Creepy armor via the caves, which you can visit as early as you like (presuming you have the weapons and meds for it). Once you’ve defeated a few Creepy enemies, you can skin their bodies for Creepy Armor. Do this enough times, and you can have a full set.

This is going to be your defensive armor for the bunkers and the caves, especially if you fight the mid-game bosses, the Pufftons, and any other large challenging foe Endnight throw your way before release.

Be advised, try not to use this overground on regular cannibals as it is a challenge to get the resources. Its a bit overkill to use it against them, and potentially an inefficient use of resources.

Bone Armor

  • Heavy reduces 1 armor,
  • Light attacks typically require two hits before breaking one bone armor.

Bone Armor is more than likely your common source of armor, especially when you build a base, and have got lots of rope from the abandoned camps, caves, and other locations. Bones come in steady supply from burning cannibals, which you will likely do if you end up building abase and burning the corpse of your enemies. Moreso, Bones are often found in the caves anyway, meaning there are some decent spawns to grab them most of the time. You’ll likely be using this armor by the time you want to go explore some caves and intend to fight their residents, but will begin to replace it as Creepy becomes more accessible.

Tech Armor

Here is a look at how to make Tech Armor in Sons of the Forest, including more information on its stats.

  • Seems to withstand around 4-6 light attacks, depending on the creature you are fighting.
  • Heavy attacks seem to count for 2-3 light attacks, depending on the creature.

Tech Armor is the best armor in the game in terms of defensiveness. However, this is also the hardest armor to make, especially in a multiplayer server. Therefore, players will need to scavenge a lot before they can get their hands on the best armor in the game, which makes sense. To make it, you will need "Circuit Board" iconCircuit Board, "Batteries" iconBatteries, "Wire" iconWire, "Tech Mesh" iconTech Mesh, and "Duct Tape" iconDuct Tape. These items typically come from bunkers, caves, and the occasional abandoned camp.

Gold Armor

The Gold Armor is the most unique armor in the game. It replaces all worn armor, offering you a solid armor bar that doesn’t degrade. However, it doesn’t protect you from attacks, rather, it lowers the damage received. This armor drastically reduces Demons’ damage to the player, which is handy for saving your other armor sources. But, don’t get it confused with withstanding lots of damage from all enemies, as it provides no real value outside of the Demons in the final lava cave. If you have plenty of "Meds" iconMeds, "Health Mix" iconHealth Mix, or "Health Mix+" iconHealth Mix+, then you can use the golden armor and have a much better experience fighting Demons. Outside of that, it’s not worth using.

It is also needed to open the lava cave, and you automatically wear it while in the cube too. Therefore, it is a necessary story armor and an in-game defensive armor.

This concludes the Sons of the Forest Best Armors. Good luck gathering the resources you need to craft or salvage these armors and progress, or survive the game the best you can.
