Pokémon Encounters - Poni Coast

Name Type(s) Location (Rate)
"Dugtrio" IconDugtrio (Alolan) Ground/Steel Rustling spots on the ground (100%)

Not to be confused with the similar-sounding Poni Breaker Coast, this tiny coastal area is situated along the north-east side of Poni Island, and connects Poni Plains with Poni Gauntlet. As you enter, there’s a ramp leading to a small raised area directly ahead, and boulder a that you can break with "Tauros" IconTauros to its left.

If you want to take some souvenir photos, feel free to head over to the top of the small raised area. Otherwise, smash the nearby boulder to smithereens, then dismount from Tauros so you can proceed north through the narrow path. After a while, there will be a ramp towards the left that leads to a stretch of higher ground.

For reference, you can also get here by going around the east side of the small raised area, breaking the boulder there and then heading west. Anyway, watch out for the tiny blighter standing above the ramp. If you’re not interested in battling kids, you’ll need to go up the ramp when he’s not looking down.

Youth Athlete Anton

Pokémon Level Type
"Sandslash" IconSandslash (Alolan) 58 Ice/Steel

The Alolan "Sandslash" IconSandslash has high Attack and Defense, but otherwise mediocre stats. This one can use Metal Claw and Ice Ball for STAB, Slash if those two moves aren’t effective, and Defense Curl to boost its Defense. Fire and Fighting-types will quickly snuff it out; Ground-types are also good.

At the top of the ramp, head north to begin with. If you’re trying to avoid Anton, you’ll want to hug the cliff side. When you reach the far end, search around to discover a hidden Max Revive. Next, turn around and go all the way south. Jump over the ledge and pick up TM97 Dark Pulse nearby to the right.

Next, you’ll need to either fight your way past a pair of trainers below or use "Charizard" IconCharizard to fly away to safety.

Tourist Couple Steve and Reika

Pokémon Level Type
"Exeggutor" IconExeggutor 59 Grass/Psychic
"Exeggutor" IconExeggutor (Alolan) 59 Grass/Dragon

Both "Exeggutor" IconExeggutor can use Leaf Storm and Wood Hammer for Grass-type STAB, Psyshock for Psychic-type STAB, and Egg Bomb if all else fails. The shorter Exeggutor is weak to Fire, Ice, Flying, Poison, Dark, Ghost, and doubly weak to Bug. Meanwhile, the taller Exeggutor is weak to Flying, Poison, Bug, Dragon, Fairy, and doubly weak to Ice.

After you’ve dealt with the tourist couple, jump over the ledge below to return to the entrance. From here, make your way back to the base of the ramp, near where Anton is standing. Directly north, there’s a narrow path that’s home to a burrowing Pokémon. If you want, you can go in that direction.

Otherwise, summon Tauros and smash the boulder to the east, if you haven’t done so already, and then carry on north from the rubble. A short distance away, there’s another boulder to the left that you can break. Meanwhile, if you continue north towards the slope just ahead, you’ll reach the next area–Poni Gauntlet.

For now, head west past the final boulder. On the other side, there’s another pair of trainers looking to take on challengers. If you don’t think they’re worthy, you can skip them by hugging the hill above the shattered boulder. Or if you came here via the burrowing Pokémon’s path, you can simply stroll behind them.

Honeymooners Noriko and Devin

Pokémon Level Type
"Ninetales" IconNinetales 59 Fire
"Sandslash" IconSandslash 59 Ground
"Geodude" IconGeodude 59 Rock/Ground
"Graveler" IconGraveler 59 Rock/Ground
"Golem" IconGolem 59 Rock/Ground

Noriko has two Pokémon. Her first, "Ninetales" IconNinetales, can use Flamethrower for STAB, Quick Attack to attack first, Safeguard to protect its party from status conditions, and Confuse Ray to do what it says on the tin. Water and Rock-types are obviously effective.

Next, she has a Sandslash that can use Earthquake for STAB (although it’ll also severely damage Devin’s Pokémon), Gyro Ball to hurt faster foes, Swords Dance to boost its Attack, and Sandstorm to whip up a sandstorm. Grass-types are ideal.

Meanwhile, Devin has the full evolution line of "Geodude" IconGeodude. All of them can use Stone Edge and Earthquake for STAB–likewise, the latter will damage Noriko’s Pokémon too. They can also use Double Edge, and Explosion as a last resort. Grass or Water-types are recommended.

Further north, there’s one more trainer, who’s staring to the north. Next to him is a Power Bracer, which is the fourth Power item you can obtain for free on Poni island–this one enhancing Attack growth.

Firefighter Aiden

Pokémon Level Type
"Octillery" IconOctillery 60 Water
"Clawitzer" IconClawitzer 60 Water

"Octillery" IconOctillery is an evolved "Remoraid" IconRemoraid with solid offensive stats, but disappointing Speed. It can use Hydro Pump for STAB, Ice Beam to put a dent in Grass-types, and Hyper Beam to cause major damage. Electric-types are the safest choice, or Grass-types if they’re fast.

"Clawitzer" IconClawitzer is an evolved "Clauncher" IconClauncher with exceptional Special Attack, but is again on the slow side. This one can use Muddy Water and Water Pulse for STAB–the latter boosted by its Mega Launcher Ability. It can also use Aqua Jet to go first. Grass-types can handle it best.

Once you’ve cleaned out the area, exit north-east to Poni Gauntlet.
