Outside of earning them after battles, the only other way to get a Sub-Person is via fusion. You gain the ability to do a Normal Fusion upon reaching the third floor of You in Wonderland, which allows you to fuse two Personas together to get a new one. Upon clearing You in Wonderland, you will gain access to Triangle Fusion, which will let you fuse three Personas together. The results of fusing Personas together is not random and actually is set in stone, according to a bunch of formulae and mechanics that should be familiar to anyone who’s played a Shin Megami Tensei game.
Whenever you’re doing a Fusion, the end result will always take into account the base level of the ingredients used. The first thing you need to look at when fusing Personas is the Arcana in which they belong, such as Slime belonging to the Fool Arcana. That’s because when you combine it with a Persona of another Arcana, that will determine the resulting Arcana. For example, fusing a Fool Persona and a Magician one will always net you a Persona of the Empress Arcana. How do you determine which Persona you will get, though? That depends on which type of fusion you’re doing, as Normal and Triangle fusion have different rules they use.
Remember that both the base level of the Persona and their Arcana are used in determining which one you will get. Take their base level (the level in which they start out) and add them together, then divide by two and add one more to it. With the resulting number and Arcana, look at the list of Personas and you will want to go to the nearest level one that is higher than what you got.
As an example, take Legion (Fool Arcana) and Agathion (Magician Arcana) and fuse them together. Looking at the chart above, you see that Fool and Magician will net you a Persona of the Empress Arcana. Legion has a base level of 21 and Agathion a base level of 3, so you add them up to get 24, divide by two to get 12 and add one more to get a result of 13. Yaksini is level 11 and Titania is level 19, but since you receive the higher Persona, then the result of the above fusion is Titania.
Triangle Spread is similar to Normal Spread, but there are new rules put into place that make it more complicated. The first thing you need to figure out is which Personas to fuse at the beginning. This is done by looking at the Personas’ current levels, with the highest of the three being the third Persona used in the fusion. Once you figure that out, fuse the other two using the rules described in the Normal Spread above.
When you’ve got the result from fusing the third one, look at the pinkish colored rectangles in the tablef above to find the Arcana result for your Triangle Spread. For the math portion of the fusion, add all three of the base levels together and divide by three, than add five to that to get your final number. As with Normal Spread, you want the first Persona that is a higher level (or the same level if it works out that way, as in the example below).
Let’s look at an example to help explain the Triangle Spread a little better. Let’s fuse Slime (Fool; base 1 and current level 3), Agathion (Magician; base 3 and current 4) and Ame no Uzume (Priestess; base 6 and current 6). Since Ame no Uzume has the highest current level, it is the third Persona and you fuse Slime and Agathion with Normal Fusion rules to get an Empress Arcana. Using that knowledge, Empress + Priestess in the Triangle Fusion chart will net you a Justice Persona. Add their base levels (1 + 3 + 6 = 10), divide by three (round it down to 3) and add five to get 8. Taking a look at the Justice Personas, you would get Angel, who is level 8.
There are a few more kinds of fusions that can be done in Persona Q, all of which are special and need to be differentiated from the above two. These are Same Arcana Fusions and Special Fusions and are described below.
Same Arcana Fusions
Attempting to fuse two or three Personas of the same Arcana will not get you the same results as above, as they have their own sets of rules. Doing two Personas of the same Arcana will net you a Persona that is weaker than the ingredients used (ex. Jack Frost and Orobas will get you Agathion). For three Personas of the same Arcana, you will get a Persona that is higher than the ingredients used (ex. Agathion, Orobas and Jack Frost will net you Hua Po).
Later in the game, you will unlock the Sacrificial Fusion option in the Velvet Room. This option allows you to get rid of two Personas in your inventory to give EXP to a third one. It’s a fantastic choice to use this whenever you have a Persona you want to keep that’s lagging behind in levels. Sometimes, sacrificing a Persona will have that one leave behind an item for you, which can be useful in getting some powerful weapons.
These fusions do not fall in the categories above, as they will require you to use specific Personas. For example, to get Alice, you will have to fuse Belial and Nebiros, which is the only combination that will get you her. These Special Fusions are looked over when doing other fusions. Look below for a table for every Special Fusion in the game.
|Alice||Nebiros x Belial|
|Ardha||Shiva x Parvati|
|Beelzebub||Astaroth x Baal Zebul|
|Black Frost||Jack Frost x Pyro Jack x King Frost|
|Michael||Uriel x Gabriel x Raphael|
|Norn||Atropos x Clotho x Lachesis|
|Pale Rider||Red Rider x White Rider x Black Rider|
|Shiva||Rangda x Barong|
|Zeus||Warrior Zeus x Seth|
