Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

New Battle Features in Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth

By
Jarrod Garripoli

Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth is the ninth entry in the main Like A Dragon/Yakuza series, and is the second game that features the turn-based battle system. This was a huge departure from the normal beat-em-up gameplay of the other titles, but it definitely makes sense given Ichiban’s love of Dragon Quest. This page will look at the returning features of the battle system from Yakuza: Like A Dragon, as well as the new features being introduced with this entry.

The battles in Infinite Wealth will still be turn-based.

Infinite Wealth Battle System: Returning Features

If you never had a chance to play Yakuza: Like A Dragon, but played previous games prior to that, then you may be confused whenever you get into a battle. Instead of the brawler/beat-em-up style that Kiryu had, the battle system in Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth is turn-based. It’s similar to the Dragon Quest titles, as well as the older Final Fantasy games. You have your commands assigned to the four face buttons, like Skills, normal Attack, and Guard. The other option, Etc., allows you to use items and any other extra options, like Poundmates, which also return.

When you choose Attack, your character will use their current weapon to strike the enemy, sometimes knocking them down. Skills will allow you to pick any unlocked special attacks from a list, with those skills usually having an extra bit to them. This is either pressing a button at the right time, or mashing another button, usually to increase the power of that attack. Sometimes, whenever the character was close to an object in the environment, they would pick it up and use it to attack the enemy.

Infinite Wealth Battle System: New Features

In Yakuza: Like A Dragon, your characters (and the enemies) would move around on their own, so lining up certain abilities would be quite difficult. Thankfully, Infinite Wealth changed it so you have a limited area in which to move your characters during battle. This makes it much easier to line up area-of-effect skills, get close to allies to perform combo attacks and even knockback enemies into other enemies and objects.

The Smackdown feature allows you to instantly finish battles against far weaker enemies.

Another new option for battles is called Smackdown, which allows you to quickly end fights with enemies that are far weaker than yourself. Of course, you don’t always have to choose this, as you will receive less experience than doing the battle normally. However, it is a great way to get a lot of money and items quickly. It’s not exactly clear what the level difference needs to be to trigger Smackdown, though, but the screenshot showing a difference of 11 means it shouldn’t be a huge one.
