The world of Far Cry 4 takes place in Kyrat, a fictional place that is split into a southern area and a northern one. The north part of Kyrat is locked for the player until they manage to progress in the main storyline, after which, the player will be free to explore both areas unhindered.

As with Far Cry 3, the map will be covered with clouds whenever you begin the game, concealing roads and other details like animal locations. You will be able to uncover the map by visiting and scaling Bell Towers, which are the same as Radio Towers in the previous game. This will not only reveal the game for the area surrounding the Bell Tower, but it will also unlock side missions and locations as well.

Both Bell Towers (similar to Radio Towers) and Outposts return in Far Cry 4, with functions being the same as in the previous game.

Players will be able to explore Kyrat while on foot, but can also employ vehicles such as cars and even a gyrocopter. Later on in the game, they will also get to use a grappling hook to climb certain cliffs, as well as a Wingsuit to help them glide through the air.
