Azarian, the Forsaken Son Location¶
Defeat Jamanra, the Risen King and he’ll turn the elements against you, conjuring up a sandstorm to halt your advance. To circumvent this barrier you’ll need to explore new areas, overcome trials and of course, vanquish bosses, one of which is Azarian, the Forsaken Son. To find this foe, travel to the city of Keth and pass through it, The Lost City and the Buried Shrines before finally reaching the Halani Shrine. Inside you’ll find Azarian airing out his grievances to his mother, but it won’t be long before he turns his attention to you.
Azarian Boss Strategy¶
Azarian may be a petulant child seeking petty vengeance, but it would be wise not to dwell too much on the nature of his complaints - despite having the motivations of a child, he’s a massive, four-armed brute who bears two flaming flails and two scythes into battle, and while the arena you fight in starts out reasonably large, the braziers in each corner will inevitably sustain damage as the fight drags on, spilling their flaming contents on the ground around them, progressively making more and more of the arena hazardous until only a small clearing in the center remains. In some ways this fight is similar to your earlier bout with Brambleghast - Azarian is a highly aggressive melee-focused enemy, and although this time you’ve got more room to maneuver, that space will be be subject to damage-over-time effects as the fight goes on. Fire resistance will serve you well in this battle, as will knowledge of Azarian’s attacks and how to respond to them. You might have to grind and rely on RNG to sort out the former, but we’ll help with the latter by discussing Azarian’s attacks, below:
Chop and Fling¶
At the start of the fight Azarian will only use one attack, albeit one with a sneaky followup variant. He’ll stalk you menacingly and try to chop at you with one of his scythes, which will deal moderate damage if it hits. These attacks don’t cover a lot of ground and are fairly easy to dodge, but every once in a while Azarian will follow up by flinging fiery orbs at you, which can catch you off guard after you dodge the initial attack. If you can bait and avoid the chop half of this attack without dodge rolling, you should be able to see the followup fling coming and properly dodge it.
Later on in the fight, the fling phase of this attack may be accompanied by the formation of an arching wall of flame. This will burn for a while and deal light damage-over-time if you stand in it - generally it shouldn’t deal enough damage to deter you from moving through it, but it can disrupt regeneration.
Whirling Combo¶
Deal any damage to Azarian and he’ll add this attack to his repertoire. It starts out like his standard chop attack, save instead of striking the floor and pausing, he’ll spin in a full circle several times while moving in a line. He cannot track during this attack, so long as you don’t dodge away from his first attack (and consequently into any of his subsequent spins) you should be fine.
Flaming Flail Sweep¶
Azarian will sweep his weapons in front of him, shooting out a wave of fire. This attack has moderate range, but given that half or more of the battlefield will be engulfed in flames by the time you start seeing it, that doesn’t account for much. It deals heavy damage, but the flames converge on each other at the midpoint, forming something of an hourglass shape, meaning it’s easiest to dodge if you’re not too close or too far away. All in all this attack will reach around half the length of the arena, and if you’re standing off-center at the midpoint of this attack you may not even have to dodge roll to avoid damage.
Flame Slam¶
Azarian will slam his weapons on the ground, creating a cone of fire that spreads forward from him. This attack only has moderate range and spread, but again, as the battlefield becomes progressively more and more dangerous to traverse, any AoE can prove bothersome. If you see him rear back with his weapons above his head, be ready to dodge to the side - this is probably Azarian’s most powerful attack, capable of shaving 300+ damage off in a single hit! He can track your movement while he’s rearing back with his weapons, so don’t dodge prematurely - wait for him to start swinging down to dodge!
Your foes’ attacks are honestly somewhat standard boss fare - if you’re played an ARPG before, you’ve probably seen very similar attacks. Azarian deals a fair bit of damage with some of his attacks (especially the “Flame Sweep”), but he’s not going to one-shot you like Zalmarath the Colossus could. Instead, Azarian makes up for this by simply increasing the tempo of his attacks as his health bar dwindles, forcing your dodge windows to become more precise as the fight drags on while the fragile braziers in the corners cover the room with damaging embers, restricting your mobility. Take your time to learn how to dodge Azarian’s attacks early on in the fight when they’re coming out slower and you have more room to maneuver - it’ll pay dividends later in the fight, especially as iframes become key to avoiding damage.
Put Azarian in time out, then head through the gate to find Halani, The Water Goddess. Talk to her and heed her request by using the Everburning Cinders held by the statue at the end of the chamber to free her and she’ll leave behind The Essence of Water, which you need to recreate the Horn of Vastiri.
