A craftsperson is only as good as their tools… okay, that’s not true, give an amateur top-of-the-line kit and they still probably won’t be very good, but even an expert can be hindered by the lack of proper tools. Case in point, Renly the blacksmith is handy enough, but having left his Smithing Tools behind when he fled Ogham Village, he’s not capable of providing his full range of potential services. Find these tools and bring them back to the refugee blacksmith - this page will provide a walkthrough for the quest Finding the Forge in Path of Exile 2.
Page Breakdown¶
Starting Finding the Forge¶
During the main quest Secrets in the Dark you’ll need to free “The Hooded One” by recovering some Rune of Power in The Red Vale, in the process defeating The Rust King. Do this, have Renly craft some Runed Spike for you, and talk to Una in the Grelwood near The Hooded Man. After a scene this quest should start… technically, but you still need to talk to Renly to really get the ball rolling - when you do he’ll ask you to keep an eye out for his smithing tools, abandoned in the wake of Count Geonor’s madness.
Travel to Ogham Village¶
The next phase of this quest will likely be the longest, as you’ll have to trek through The Grim Tangle, the Cemetery of the Eternals (including subareas), the Hunting Grounds (and possibly a side diversion into Freythorn) and finally through the Ogham Farmlands to reach Ogham Village. So, about a third of Act 1. Suffice to say, this quest will be active and functionally dormant for a while.
Find Renly’s Tools¶
We’re not going to lie, just reaching Ogham Village is significantly more than half the battle. Once you’re there, however, you’ll have to fight through werewolves, mercenaries, burning dead and more as you scour the still-burning village for Renly’s Tools. Like many things in Path of Exile 2, the exact location of your objective is randomly generated. You’ll tend to find it in a semi-enclosed area along the edge of the level, often near a “Count’s Decree” notice. If you’re unlucky you’ll just have to scour the entire map to find what you’re looking for - in this case Renly’s Tools are marked in green text and can be found on a table. Just be wary, as these tools take up a 2x3 stretch of inventory space, so if you’re overencumbered you may need to ditch something in order to pick these tools up.
Once you have the tools, return to Renly in the Clearfell Encampment and he’ll reward you by setting up a Salvage Bench. Yeah, nothing fancy like a permanent stat boost or a Book of Specialization, but the Salvage Bench can be useful - bring superior or socketed items to it and you can break them down, turning them into Artificer’s Shards, Armorurer’s Scraps and Blacksmith’s Whetstones, which can be used to add sockets to gear and boost the quality of armor and weapons, respectively.
