Nemeses are optional bosses that you can fight in Norende Village; you can receive them via online or StreetPass interactions. Their main purpose is to provide extra challenge, although you can also defeat them for experience points, job points and items.

How To Obtain

Initially, nemeses are sent by Square Enix between certain dates–if you Update Data during this period, you’ll receive the currently-sent nemesis. You can also receive nemeses from guests (randomly from updating data or via StreetPass) if they were sending one.

Up to 7 Nemeses can reside in your village at one time–if you get new ones, they will start replacing the older ones (unless you protect them). Otherwise, Nemeses will stay forever, until you defeat them. By the way, having Nemeses prowling around has no effect on the well-being of your village or residents.

Dealing With Nemeses

When you select a Nemesis, it will display their name, recommended level and initial distribution period. From here, you can choose from the following options:

Send

Send the selected Nemesis to guests (Internet or StreetPass) that receive your profile; you still keep the Nemesis. Note that you must update your profile for other players to receive the Nemesis–for Internet guests, you’ll need to Update Data, while for StreetPass, you should update your Friend Summon or load the StreetPass Inbox.

Protect

Prevents the Nemesis from being overwritten when you have the maximum number of Nemeses (seven) and receive new ones.

Fight

Challenge the Nemesis. Succeed and you’ll earn rewards like a normal battle and the Nemesis will disappear. Fail and you’ll get a Game Over like normal (so remember to save beforehand). Unlike normal bosses, you can use the Run command to escape the battle if things look bad (except when facing asterisk holders).

Duel To The Death

(1 of 2) Each Nemesis requires expert strategy and the wits to match.

When facing Nemeses, treat them the same as normal bosses, if not higher. For many, you’ll need to pull out all the stops to send them packing. Definitely do as the game advises and ensure your characters are at or above the recommended Level before facing them; otherwise it’s not going to be pretty.

Since you get Nemeses mostly at random, it can be difficult to find the right Nemesis for your Level. Don’t be frustrated if, for example, your party is in the Level 20 range and you constantly receive Level 70 to 99 Nemeses. Once your party reaches high Levels, you’ll have less of a problem finding the right challenge, but it does make lower Level Nemeses a cakewalk.
