Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak

New Sword & Shield Silkbind Attacks and Switch Skills

By
Matt Chard

The Sword & Shield is one of 14 weapon types in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. The play style of the Sword & Shield is by using quick attacks up close while being agile enough to dodge most incoming blows. Furthermore, it has a Shield that can guard and also perform a bludgeon combo that can stun monsters. Not only that, but it can use items with its weapon unsheathed too. With Sunbreak, the Sword & Shield will obtain new Silkbind Attacks as well as new Switch Skills which will add even more depth to its already powerful arsenal.

The Sword & Shield is a quick versatile weapon that can stun as well as apply statuses, and elemental damage quickly.

New Silkbind Attack: Destroyer Oil

This new technique brings back Oils from previous games, these oils would allow you to coat your weapon with various buffs. Unfortunately you only get the one in Sunbreak, the Destroyer Oil, which was first available in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. This particular oil allows you to use a Wirebug to cover your blade with an ointment that can make monsters flinch more easily.

How to unlock Destroyer Oil

This technique can be learned early on in the expansion by defeating the Daimyo Hermitaur that Rondine gives you the quest for. This allows you to go to Elgado, where you’ll talk to Master Arlow, and eventually Master Utsushi. He’ll give you the first batch of new Switch Skills including Surge Slash Combo.

New Switch Skill: Twin Blade Combo

A new combo for the Sword & Shield is never a bad thing, and this is exactly what happens with Twin Blade Combo. This combo changes the end of the Sword & Shield combo with a Circular backhand slice, and follows it up with a thrust. As there are more hits to this combo, it’ll make it slightly easier to apply status, and elemental effects to the monster.

How to unlock Twin Blade Combo

This technique can be learned early on in the expansion by defeating the Daimyo Hermitaur that Rondine gives you the quest for. This allows you to go to Elgado, where you’ll talk to Master Arlow, and eventually Master Utsushi. He’ll give you the first batch of new Switch Skills including Twin Blade Combo.

New Switch Skill: Shield Bash

The final technique you can learn for Sword and Shield is Shield Bash. This will allow you to use a wirebug to launch yourself forward, shield raised. If the attacks connects with a monster you can instantly follow up with a variety of attacks. This skill can even be used as a parry if timed right!

How to unlock Shield Bash

Once you’ve completed the MR3★ Urgent Quest “Ice Wolf, Red Moon”, you will become Master Rank 4. This will allow you to unlock the second batch of Switch Skills including Shield Bash by talking to Master Utsushi in the Kamura Gathering Hub.

Switch Skill Swap

This isn’t a new skill, but it is a new way to use them! The Switch Skill Swap will allow you to change your equipped skills whilst in battle. There will be two scrolls, one red, and one blue. By visiting an Item box either at the hub or in the tent during a quest, you can customize your favorite skills to each scroll.

The Switch Skill Swap system looks to reinvent the way Monster Hunter Rise is played.

When you’re in battle, you can swap between each set to give you access to your other skills. Another great addition to this system was the Swap Evade. This allows you to evade in any direction by pressing the roll button after you have swapped sets.
