Twins Playstyle¶
Twins, much like their counterpart, Daggers, are some of the tougher weapon types to unlock in the game. The first one will come in the starting area, but the rest will be scattered throughout the rest of this massive adventure, meaning you’ll want to keep on top of them with improved materials before you unlock newer Twins. Much like Daggers, Twins are about speed but, where they shine, is the damage they can pump out on top of that, featuring the highest of any weapon type (and also shared with Polearms). The table below details the general stats of Twins, ranging from one (lowest) to three (highest):
Category | Rating |
---|---|
Speed | 2 |
Recovery | 1 |
Advance | 3 |
Damage | 3 |
Stagger | 2 |
Strike Area | 2 |
A quick glance will tell you all you need to know about Twins, they’re powerful, quick, weapons that also feature the highest Advance rating in the game. Advance is a very useful stat, this indicates how far you move forward when using your attacks, and is especially notable on the charged overhead strike that can catch enemies out before a battle even begins. Naturally, you will have to throw caution to the wind a little, both of the dual weapons mean you’re going to have to get up close to your target.
This means you want to adopt an aggressive playstyle, and you’ll absolutely need to make sure that you don’t skimp out on making sure any weapons you build have high Stamina so you can get in and out without depleting it. The largest difference between Daggers and Twins (beyond the increased damage) is the recovery on the Twins is the lowest of any weapon (shared with Polearms once again), this means you want to make sure you’re safe before you begin recovering your Stamina, or, better yet, getting the job done before then.
As mentioned above, there are two main goals when it comes to forging Twins, the first is to focus on increasing damage as much as you can, as this is where they shine. Pay attention to the Twins you’re using and prioritize Momentum of Penetration accordingly. Likewise, Stamina and Speed are crucial and can be focused on over damage if they would otherwise be too low, it’s no good having dual weapons that are going to leave you open after a few strikes.
Twin Unlocks¶
As mentioned at the top, there are five Forger Scrolls for you to find for the Twins category, and you’ll find the first of these during the second area of the game, The Hollow Plain. You’ll find each of these in the sections below with details on where you can find the enemies needed to complete the unlock condition.
Weapon | Required Enemies |
---|---|
Twin Axes | Defeat 60 Putrids (that are wielding Twins) |
Twin Mallets | Defeat 10 Forger Sentinels |
Twin Picks | Defeat 40 The Hiss |
Twin War Axes | Defeat 15 Anthantoi Shamans |
Twin Warhammers | Defeat 15 The Hiss from Bastion |
Twin Axes¶
The Twin Axes deal heavy damage at the expense of high Stamina consumption.
Style | Characteristics |
---|---|
Slashing | Top Heavy (+Momentum, -Parry and Stamina), Curved (+Laceration, -Penetration), Flamed (+Laceration, -Block and Parry), and Curved Shaft (-Block, +Stagger) |
The first of the Twins category can be obtained as soon as you exit the game’s first area, Besacaar Hamlet to the south and into The Hollow Plain. Once you go south into this area, you’ll start encountering Putrids for the first time and any that you kill that are wielding Twins themselves will count toward the 60 you need to unlock these. Naturally, the best way to farm these enemies then are killing the horde near the northern entrance of The Hollow Plain and then using the Troll River anvil to refresh them and continue.
You’ll be using the Twin Axes for a large chunk of Chapter 1 before the next set of Twins become available, so it’s a good thing that these are strong weapons. The Twin Axes are pure damage-based Twins that are focused on dealing heavy damage as quickly as possible. The downside is the Stamina consumption is high, so don’t completely tank Stamina when building the weapon. One unlocked, go for the Flamed head, as you shouldn’t be blocking and parrying with this weapon anyway. While it may be tempting to add extra Reach to the Twin Axes, it’s not worth the huge penalty to Stamina, stick with either 8 or 16“ Curved.
Twin Mallets¶
The Twin Mallets are an excellent source of applying Blunt damage quickly.
Style | Characteristics |
---|---|
Blunt | Weighted (+Momentum, -Stamina and Dodge), Light (-Momentum, +Stamina and Dodge), Top Heavy (+Momentum, -Parry and Stamina), Curved (+Laceration, -Penetration), and Curved Shaft (-Block, +Stagger) |
You’ll have to wait a while before you can earn the next set of Twins, the Twin Mallets, as you won’t encounter the Forger Sentinels until you’re sent back to the Kar-Lethel Swamp from Doyen Graves to retrieve some Automaton pieces. Fortunately, any time you need to charge a medallion to create a path, you’ll have to face three Forger Sentinels, meaning this will take care of itself. If you’re looking to unlock them sooner, however, shortly after you meet your first Sentinels, you’ll make your way to the Coastal Watchtower anvil in Kar-Lethel Swamp. After climbing the ladder here, the wall section features two Forger Sentinels that you can respawn by using the nearby anvil.
The first thing you’ll notice about the Twin Mallets are that they feature the Blunt damage style, usually reserved for Polearms, this makes them extremely attractive as it gives you a quicker way of dealing Blunt damage to enemies. Due to their nature, you want to prioritize Momentum and damage in general while forging these, and there’s nothing wrong with giving it decent Block too, as it excels here. It’s worth giving the weapon the Big Head, and if Block is something you’re not bothered about, go for the 24“ Shaft for the extra Stamina, Damage, and Momentum.
Twin Picks¶
The Twin Picks are the fastest piercing weapons in the game.
Style | Characteristics |
---|---|
Piercing | Light (-Momentum, +Stamina and Dodge), Top Heavy (+Momentum, -Parry and Stamina), Curved (+Laceration, -Penetration), and Spiked (+Laceration and Penetration, -Parry and Sharpening) |
You’ll need to wait until you reach the second chapter of Blades of Fire before you can unlock the Twin Picks, The Hiss are not encountered until you make your way to Tok’s Kingdom. Throughout the southern parts of this region, but especially the Northern and Southern Hiss City, you’ll find plenty of these tricky foes about, making this a quick weapon to unlock. We like to use the Serpents Amphitheater in Watchtower Domain and go south into Northern Hiss City to farm the kills.
Much like the Twin Mallets above, the Twin Picks focus on a useful Style, this time around being Piercing. While Spears remain the undisputed king of Piercing attacks, the Twin Picks are no slouch and you’re able to easily forge very high Penetration on to them, making these a fantastic alternative due to their speed. You’ll absolutely want the Spiked Head here and a Concave Cross Section, but go for 8“ for the Shaft to restore a bit of that lost Stamina elsewhere. This is a weapon that you’ll want to aim for maximum Forge Stars as it is one you’ll be repairing often.
Twin War Axes¶
The Twin War Axes offer two damage styles and an emphasis on better Blocking.
Style | Characteristics |
---|---|
Slashing and Piercing | Light (-Momentum, +Stamina and Dodge), Top Heavy (+Momentum, -Parry and Stamina), Block (+Block, -Stamina), and Curved (+Laceration, -Penetration) |
The next set of Twins can also be earned while in Tok’s Kingdom, the Chapter 2 region, although you’ll have to wait until you get your hands on the Light Rune before you find the first Anthantoi Shaman, who you only often fight one at a time. Return to the Curved City of Stones by way of the Light Rune near the Aran & Adso’s Camp anvil in Watchtower Domain and you’ll find yourself in a new part you couldn’t reach before. Here, you’ll encounter the odd Anthantoi Shaman here and there, so defeat them, return to the anvil mentioned above, and do it all over again, fortunately you only need to defeat 15 of these.
The Twin War Axes are quite a simple weapon to understand, they’re similar to the Twin Axes, but there’s a few factors that change them up. For one, you’ll have access to both Slashing and Piercing, one of only two Twins that has this feature. The other main difference to the Twin Axes is that it trades some of its damage for a much, much better Block stat, making this one of the better Twins if you want to add some defensive stability to your game. Arguably, if you’re using Twins, you want to be more aggressive, so this may be less attractive to you.
Twin Warhammers¶
The Twin Warhammers are all about having a fast weapon with the Piercing and Blunt styles on them.
Style | Characteristics |
---|---|
Piercing and Blunt | Weighted (+Momentum, -Stamina and Dodge), Light (-Momentum, +Stamina and Dodge), and Top Heavy (+Momentum, -Parry and Stamina) |
The final set of Twins you can earn won’t come until you reach Blades of Fire’s third Chapter, set in The Niveous Realm. While here, you’ll reach the King’s Bastion area where you’ll encounter a new type of The Hiss wielding Twin Warhammers. Once again, you’ll need to defeat 15 of them, and fortunately, this area is rather small and you’ll find plenty of The Hiss wandering around. Make use of an anvil like the West Tower Cells and quickly clean up any remaining The Hiss you need.
As for the weapon itself, you’ll immediately notice that it has two styles on offer, Piercing and Blunt, this is a very useful duo to have on a single weapon, especially with the speed of Twins. You’ll also be able to achieve a decent Block rate with them if you decide to build them in that direction, but instead, we’d urge you to focus on the Momentum and Penetration stats, while not completely ignoring your Stamina as these Twins can be heavy on Stamina Consumption. Still, the novelty of having Piercing and Blunt on a single set of Twins is one that we feel is always worth carrying into battle with you.
All Twins Seneschal Locations¶
Throughout your adventure, you’ll encounter statues, known as Seneschals, that when presented with a weapon belonging to that type, will unlock a new part to make use of in the forging process. You can see on the Forger’s Scroll screen how many parts a weapon can unlock and you will only gain a part for the weapon presented. The table below will show you where to find all of the Twins Seneschals.
Number | Location |
---|---|
1 | Besacarr Hamlet - Dry Riverbed: Go northwest from the anvil to find it hidden behind some rocks in the corner |
2 | Kar-Lethel Swamp - Forger’s Sanctum: From the southern exit, go back on yourself to the northwest to find a way up on top and follow it around to the south |
3 | The Crimson Fort - Cellar Rooftops: Once back inside, go down the stairs and follow it to the end |
4 | The Crimson Fort - Eagles Bridge: Go across the bridge, over to the other side of the room, and find a gap you can leap across that leads to a locked door |
5 | The Crimson Fort - Library Tower: Right at the top of the tower, accessed by climbing a ladder in the room where Adso leans on the chronicle to open the door |
6 | Kar-Lethel Swamp - Coastal Wall: Right next to this anvil |
7 | Belitara’s Witchwood - Queen’s Watch: As you go into the thin passage to the northeast of the area, on top of the broken bridge |
8 | Tok’s Kingdom - Watchtower Domain: In the southeast corner, behind the Soul Rune area. Go through the shallow water to reach it |
9 | Tok’s Kingdom - Southern Hiss City - Citadel Overlook: On the path east of the anvil, you need to get here by looping around from the northeast (by taking the ladder to the east near the green teleporter) |
10 | Tok’s Kingdom - Northern Hiss City: When entering from the north, go into the center to find a house where the Blue Lady will spawn next to this statue |
11 | Tok’s Kingdom - The Eigon’s Abbey: After using the Time Rune on the west side, keep going to find it in the corridor |
12 | Tok’s Kingdom - The City of Curved Stones: In the northeast corner of the map, accessed by going through the Light Rune area near Aran & Adso’s Camp and taking a right at Tok. In the next area, go to the end of the path (past the skeletons) and follow the path past the building to your right. You’ll come to an intersection where you need to go forward into the building |
13 | Tok’s Kingdom - The Roggs Mountains - Morlock’s Abyss: Can be found just opposite the anvil |
There you have it; you now know everything there is to know about the Twins category of weapons in Blades of Fire. You can now deliver quick, precise strikes up close to take your enemy in a flurry of slashes.
