Once you reach the end of the Ancient Soil quest in Avowed, you’ll face an important decision. While there’s no perfect choice here, deciding the fate of the citizens of Fior will factor into the game’s ending. It can also raise the stakes for decisions you make later on in the game. Read on for a primer on Ancient Soil’s key choices and whether you should move Fior’s citizens to Thirdborn or Paradis in Avowed.
Quilicci will help you understand these choices.
All choices in Ancient Soil¶
Towards the end of the Ancient Soil quest, you’ll speak with Quilicci, Yatzli, and the governor. This conversation happens regardless of whether you save the city of Fior mes Iverno or not. You’ll get to decide where the surviving animancers get to relocate. Your options are Thirdborn and Paradis. While both regions have their problems, one choice can seem better than the other solely because of a key choice in the Shatterscarp region.
You can save the city of Fior mes Iverno by raiding the Steel Garrote camp behind a waterfall east of the Wildwoods Outskirts Party Camp.
Picking Thirdborn is a better idea than you think.
Choosing Thirdborn¶
Thirdborn can seem like a better choice since animancy is frowned upon in Paradis due to the town’s growing Aedyrian presence. While the scorched deserts of Shatterscarp aren’t as welcoming as the bustling port, Thirdborn has a better track record when it comes to taking in refugees and finding common ground. During my first playthrough, I sent the animancers to Thirdborn because the Steel Garrote faction was already a menace in Paradis.
A crucial choice in the Shadows of the Past quest can lead to multiple deaths in Thirdborn. This can include some refugees from Fior if you send them there.
You can choose to send the animancers to Paradis.
Choosing Paradis¶
Surprisingly, picking Paradis as the animancers’ next haunt isn’t a terrible idea. They can stay right under the noses of the Steel Garrote. And while Fior’s people won’t be able to practice animancy in the open, they can still have a positive impact on Dawnshore’s crops. This does not significantly alter the ending so both options are viable if you want a positive ending. That covers the dilemma of deciding between Thirdborn and Paradis for Fior’s animancers.
