Your adventure in Avowed’s Living Lands is cut short by a poisoned arrow right as you enter the city of Paradis. While the mysterious voice in your head revives you, your killer is initially a mystery. You’ll learn that the assassin, Ygwulf of the resistance in Paradis, stays with his rebels under the Temple to Ondra. Once you confront your killer, you’ll have to pick between killing and sparing Ygwulf. Read on to learn the consequences of these choices and how they tie into Avowed’s central storyline.

All Ygwulf choices¶
You’ll face Ygwulf during the An Untimely End quest in Avowed’s first region. Here, you’ll have three choices. You can fight Ygwulf to the death, spare him, or hand him over to the Steel Garrote. Each of these choices can alter the final cutscenes that play after you complete the game. While this isn’t as drastic a choice as accepting the Voice’s powers, it decides the future of Paradis’ rebels.
Ambassador Hylgard will not be pleased if you let your killer go.
Sparing Ygwulf¶
Sparing Ygwulf is the best option here. In addition to getting a piece of Adra to upgrade your gear, you also get a Writ of Passage from the rebel Stecg as you enter the Emerald Stair region. It’ll let you pass through areas controlled by the resistance like the Riverside Cave rebel camp. While Aedyr won’t take this choice well, their disappointment won’t lead to any negative consequences. This decision also grants a positive ending for the rebels. They return to their homes and other free settlements, aiding their people in any way they can.
You can pick from three options when you confront Ygwulf.
Killing Ygwulf¶
Choosing to attack your killer can seem like the natural course of action. Your companions Kai and Marius will also support this decision. After all, it’s a risk to leave your assassin standing. Defeating Ygwulf in a boss fight grants you the Blackwing Armor. It’s a good pick for stealth players as it buffs stealth attack damage by +30% and crouched movement speed by +25%. Stecg will give you the Dissident’s Warning instead of the Writ of Safe Passage. As for how the epilogue plays out, the resistance is routed and they take to hiding in the forests from Aedyr’s might.
Making Ygwulf confess¶
Instead of killing him, you can ask Ygwulf to confess his crimes. He’s not that hard to convince, surprisingly. This leads to an execution conducted by Inquisitor Lodwyn and the Steel Garrote. In addition, the rebels will fight back by killing Garryck.
While this character shows up in the On Strange Shores quest, they don’t have much of a presence once you leave Paradis. If you’re wondering where Garryck ends up, head to the Southern Embrace near the party camp and a note will detail his demise. Just like the previous option, you’ll get the Dissident’s Warning. But you’ll miss out on the Blackwing Armor drop. That covers the repercussions of sparing or killing Ygwulf in Avowed.
